Grammy Award winning Mix Engineer offers top-class mixes for a wide range of budgets

Thomas started his career in London as the in-house mixer for producer Martin Terefe, and as a part of the Kensaltown Team (James Morrison, Jason Mraz, Train, etc).
Over the years, through working with a very wide range of musical styles, he has developed his own distinct sound - organic, warm and punchy, as well as "vibey" and exciting.

Over the past 9 years Thomas has mixed several Billboard Chart tracks, and built up an impressive discography, which includes Latin superstars Jesse y Joy (which won him two Grammy awards), Leslie Clio, Jamie Cullum, Jason Mraz as well as legends such as Cat Stevens, a-ha, Elton John and a-ha He has also recently been working with UK rapper Tinchy Stryder, and UK singer-songwriter James Bay.

"The most important thing I've learnt over the years is that a good mix is all about two things - excitement and focus. Whether it’s pop, heavy rock or a ballad, it’s all about finding out what makes each record exciting and compelling, and to build the mix around that".

Interview with Thomas Juth

Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
One of the mixes that I am most proud of is one I did for German artist Leslie Clio (I have added it to my page). It was a project which asked for a more vintage approach, and which was all about getting the right vibe. I had a lot of fun mixing it, playing with tape machines and several old pieces of equipment. That's when I have the most fun:)
Analog or digital and why?
I always work with a combination of analog and digital equipment. I think both worlds have great things to offer.
If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A pair of Proac Speakers, a UAD Apollo interface with plugins, a pair of Emperical Labs Distressors, a powerful laptop, and a Chandler Summing Mixer.
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
I have been working in the music industry for over 10 years, mostly mixing records. I started as an assistant engineer (at Mayfair Studios, London), working with some of the biggest engineers and producers around, and later move on to becoming a mix engineer myself.
Which artist would you like to work with and why?
If they were still around, I would have loved to work with The Beatles. Though, who wouldn't?:)
Can you share one music production tip?
It's not always about what you add to a production, but just as often about what you 'don't add'.
What type of music do you usually work on?
I am very flexible, and constantly work with different genres. I can mix both electronic music, and more organic sounding music.
What's your strongest skill?
Adding vibe, punch and excitement to tracks, while still preserving the dynamics.
Tell us about your studio setup.
I work with a wide range of both analogue and digital equipment/tools, and love to combine the best from the old and the new.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
In terms of production and attitude towards sound and music, George Martin has always been my biggest influence. I love how he was so open-minded, and never afraid of trying new things. And I always try to have a similar attitude in my work.
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
I do mostly mixing, and it has been my main area of expertise for the past 10 years.
What do you bring to a song?
I always try to figure out what makes each individual song special and unique, and then try to reinforce that. I believe that a good mix needs vibe and a clear focus.
