Not only that but his positive and honest feedback really helped me bring my vision to life. I know that with what we came up with, I can feel confident in selling this release. Interview with Thomas Juth
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work with a wide range of both analogue equipment and plugins, and love to combine the best from the old and the new.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: In terms of general attitude towards music, sound and creativity, George Martin has always been one of my biggest influences. I am also a big fan of Producer/Engineer Nigel Godrich, both for his productions and sound.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do mostly mixing, and it has been my main area of expertise for the past 15 years.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been working in the music industry for over 15 years, mostly mixing records. I started as an assistant engineer (at Mayfair Studios, London), working with some of the biggest engineers and producers around, and later move on to becoming a mix engineer myself.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of the mixes that I am most proud of is one I did for German artist Leslie Clio (I have added it to my page). It was a project which asked for a more vintage approach, and which was all about getting the right vibe. I had a lot of fun mixing it, playing with tape machines and several old pieces of equipment. That's when I have the most fun:)
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I always work with a combination of analog and digital equipment. I think both worlds have great things to offer.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A pair of Proac Speakers, a UAD Apollo interface with plugins, a pair of Emperical Labs Distressors, a powerful laptop, and a Chandler Summing Mixer.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: If they were still around, I would have loved to work with The Beatles. Though, who wouldn't?:)
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: It's not always about what you add to a production, but just as often about what you 'don't add'.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I am very flexible, and constantly work with different genres. I can mix both electronic music, and more organic sounding music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Adding vibe, punch and excitement to tracks, while still preserving the dynamics.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I always try to figure out what makes each individual song special and unique, and then try to reinforce that. I believe that a good mix needs vibe and a clear focus.
