Tom is an accomplished producer, really enjoyed how he interpreted the song and brought the the whole production to life. I would definitely work with him in the future.

Got Tom involved on an album I was doing with a great artist signed to an Indie label. He did an amazing job on production for one of the tracks. Great communication and excellent work. Easily worth every penny.

Looking forward to working together again soon.

Interview with Tom Read

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: Typically if a client lives locally then we will start with a session in my studio in order to create a basic piano + vocal demo of the song. If the client does not live locally then I will ask them to send me a piano + vocal demo of the song. From there, the client will give me some references for how they want the song to sound, and I will build the song, creating an arrangement and all the necessary instrumentation needed for the song. Once the client is happy with the song production, I will mix and master the song (if required) ready for release.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: I work out of my home studio in Oxford. It's a fairly simple set up but I have everything that I need to create great music. Some of my key pieces of gear and software are: Universal Audio Apollo Interface + Plugins, Neve 1073 Mic Pre, DBX 560A Compresser, Aston Origin + Stealth Mics, Nord Stage Keyboard, Native Instruments Ultimate 12, Roland Juno Synth,

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: Some musicians that currently inspire me are: Jacob Collier, Vulfpeck. Some songwriters that currently inspire me are: Julia Michaels, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). Some producers who inspire me: Quincy Jones (my hero), Pharrell, Fineas.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: I co-wrote and produced an EP for a British artist called Bryony Dunn. The first single was just released and was playlisted by Spotify (New Pop UK). The songs are such quirky and super catchy and it was super fun to make.

  9. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  10. A: I'm currently producing an EP for a London-based female pop artist who has the most incredible voice. She's also amazing with lyrics. I love working with her.

  11. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  12. A: Yes, Luke Moseley is a killer producer living and working in London. He's going places and I highly recommend him.

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: Can't I have both? I mostly use digital, but I also love analogue. You can't beat the sound of a vintage analogue synth.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: A lot of people think that making pop music is easy. It's not.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is your overall aim? Who are your influences? What is special or unique about you?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be open to new ideas and allow other people in to your music. Collaboration allows you to explore new things and exciting things and takes your music to places you couldn't take it by yourself. But ultimately, know who you are and what you want, and don't allow anyone to tell you who you should be.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I grew up in Asia, and I started of playing and singing music in my church as a child. At 21, I became a professional songwriter and recording artist, recording and releasing 7 albums. In 2012 I had a #1 iTunes album in Asia. In 2013 I moved to the UK to further my career as a songwriter and a producer, and I completed a Masters Degree in Commercial Music Production and have been working full time as a writer-producer since then.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: My all time favourite would have been Michael Jackson. Has there ever been a better pop artist? The way that he could hear the full arrangement of his songs in his head without the need for any instrumentation was incredible. For current artists, I think it would be fun to work with Harry Styles. He seems to know what he's about and I like that.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Vocal is king. You can make the dopest beats and have all the production chops in the world, but if the vocal doesn't sound good, the song won't sound good. Get the vocal sounding amazing, and everything else will slot into place after.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: The most common genres that I get asked to work on are modern pop, indie pop, and singer-songwriter. I'm equally at home behind a synth as I am an acoustic guitar. If I can use both on a song then even better!

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Being an artist and vocalist myself, I know how stressful it can be going into a studio environment with your music, and I feel that I am really able to encourage the best out of artists and their music. I've also got a really good ear for what sounds good, which is something I discovered as a kid when all my friends would ask me to make them mixtapes of my favourite songs.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I bring fresh ears, multi-instrumentation (piano, guitar, beats, vocals), and inspiration. I've been making music for over 20 years, and am an artist myself, so I know what it feels like to work with a producer on your songs. I want to help you create something that you love and are proud to release, and most importantly something that represents you as an artist.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: Essentially I produce studio quality, release-ready songs for my clients - this involves the production, mixing, and mastering of the song so that it is ready for release.
