Charles Yingling on SoundBetter

Grammy Winning Engineer (Willie Nelson & Ray Price) specializing in Rock, Americana, and Indie Roots music. Top credits include Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Kenny Rogers.

I specialize in Producing or Engineering anything involving roots music (ie recorded instruments). I love 3-5 piece rock bands, but also get a great sound on Americana records done live in the room (Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley, Kieran Kayne, Kevin Welch) Mentored by Brent Maher (Tina Turner, Sly & The Family Stone, The Judds) and Fred Foster (Kris Kristofferson, Roy Orbison, Willie Nelson), I've learned from the best.

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Charles cultivates an atmosphere that breeds authenticity and vulnerability. Throughout the process he is intentional about honoring the work and creator. His instincts are second to none. It is always an honor to work with him!! He is incredibly talented, and humble.

Interview with Charles Yingling

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Work with someone that's expensive and fast, not slow and cheap. ;)

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: Electric Guitar, Microphone, conga, tambourine, amp

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I started working under Brent Maher her in Nashville TN after graduating from the Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences. I've been working 17 years now.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Don't waste time on things that don't matter to the listener.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Mostly Singer/Songwriter and Americana music. I've made several rock and blues albums as well.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Efficiently recording and mixing music. I don't waste time on things in the studio that aren't important to the song itself.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I like to concentrate on the song as the most inspiring part of the recording, so vocals are the most important part of the mix for me. If it's not a good song, then the mix will suffer anyways.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: For recording, simply bring the band in, setup up mics and start recording (simple right?). Mixing, I like to receive files and get to work right away on the console.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: We have a medium live room with one large iso booth. We can usually fit six people with ease for recording. I operate a 1978 Trident TSM console for recording and mixing. We also have an Otari MTR90 Tape machine for multitrack as well.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Any producer that can make records with live musicians.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Analog Mixing and Recording
