Charles Yingling on SoundBetter

Hey there! I love Rock, Americana, and Indie Roots music. I use a 1978 Trident Console and 24 track tape to get the best sound possible. I like to work with people with positive attitudes and are ready to get to work. Send me some tracks to mix and I promise you won't be let down. Top credit is Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.

I specialize in Engineering/Producing and Mixing anything rock/alternative or Americana music. I love 3-5 piece rock bands, but also get a great sound on Americana records done live in the room (Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley, Kieran Kayne, Kevin Welch, Taj Mahal) Mentored by Brent Maher (Tina Turner, Sly & The Family Stone, The Judds) and Fred Foster (Kris Kristofferson, Roy Orbison, Willie Nelson), I've learned from the best. I'll prefer mixing gigs on this service as those are easy to deliver remotely, but if you want production feel free to reach out!

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Charles is absolutely amazing to work with! He has such an innate ability to pinpoint exactly what you are hearing and what needs to happen and he is quick as lightning to make everything perfect. He is also just a great guy to work with...very positive and just super great to be around.

I've trusted Charles for every record I've gotten to do in my musical career. From master sessions to demos, he is my go-to, hands down first choice. We even did an audio book together! I trust his opinion, his ears and his mixes. On top of that, I just like being around him in the studio. He's one of the good guys. Nashville is full of talent. But every once in a while you get to work with someone who is great. Charles Yingling is a great engineer.

Keni Thomas is an award-winning country music artist, Emmy-winning producer and a best selling author.

One of the best in the biz. Unbelievable talent, not only with the technical side of recording but with the ear when it comes to producing and mixing. Charles works with you. He wants just as good of an end product as the artist. There are no shortcuts with him. Highly recommend for all your recording needs.

Charles is amazing!!! I'm super grateful to work with him frequently here in Nashville - everything just always sounds and feels great with him behind the console. He has impeccible musical instincts and is a consummate pro - always a pleasure to be around and work with. He has incredible attention to detail, and the tones are spectacular, all the time. He's a real standout talent here in Nashville. We've cut tracks with strings, horns, all kinds of fun stuff lately. Thankyou Charles!!!

Charles is sonically flexible, working with small acoustic sounds to full orchestral + choir tracks to electronically generated sounds (and everything in between). With his keen and sensitive ear, Charles hears things in mixes others might miss, making his final sounds to be perfect in all listening environments. Charles is creative, offering collaboration and new ideas to every situation. Better still, his professionalism is matched by his high level of integrity - you just can't find a nicer guy. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Charles helps you see the song as you are recording it. He works quickly and seamlessly. There is no down time, fiddling around with things - he gets realtime, professional, radio ready results.
He is able to take your song, your melodies, even your ideas- and breath studio life into them. He absolutely took our project to the next level. My only complaint is that we can't work with Charles at every band session - whether it rehearsal, songwriting, or recording - he has AMAZING input every step of the way; and I would really appreciate it if he could clone himself.
    10/10 would recommend.

I’ve worked with Charles on a few of my Americana tunes and not only was he easy and enjoyable to work with, he brought innovative ideas to my project and really brought my tunes to life. He has an incredible ear for mixing and I am always pleased with the final product. The suggestions he made to tweak subtleties in my songs brought out aspects of them I hadn’t even considered and they are now my favorite parts to listen for! I trust his input and opinion wholeheartedly and recommend him highly.

Charles cultivates an atmosphere that breeds authenticity and vulnerability. Throughout the process he is intentional about honoring the work and creator. His instincts are second to none. It is always an honor to work with him!! He is incredibly talented, and humble.

Interview with Charles Yingling

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Taj Mahal & Flight Attendant

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley's "World Full Of Blues" LP. I was the engineer and mixer and it had an amazing lineup of musicians and artists (including Taj Mahal!)

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Joe Robinson

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both, because both are amazing tools!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to deliver the best product with what I'm given to work with (and we'll have much fun)

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love human interaction and the feeling of a release!

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can you play all the instruments on my project? No.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that I only do country music because I'm in Nashville. I grew up on rock, and have many country credits, but rock and roll is in my blood.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Typically I ask them what their goals are with the project. This helps me work with them on budgets and time spent recording and mixing.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Analog Mixing and Recording

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Any producer that can make records with live musicians.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: We have a medium live room with one large iso booth. We can usually fit six people with ease for recording. I operate a 1978 Trident TSM console for recording and mixing. We also have an Otari MTR90 Tape machine for multitrack as well.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: For recording, simply bring the band in, setup up mics and start recording (simple right?). Mixing, I like to receive files and get to work right away on the console.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: I like to concentrate on the song as the most inspiring part of the recording, so vocals are the most important part of the mix for me. If it's not a good song, then the mix will suffer anyways.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Efficiently recording and mixing music. I don't waste time on things in the studio that aren't important to the song itself.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly Singer/Songwriter and Americana music. I've made several rock and blues albums as well.

  33. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  34. A: Don't waste time on things that don't matter to the listener.

  35. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  36. A: I started working under Brent Maher her in Nashville TN after graduating from the Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences. I've been working 17 years now.

  37. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  38. A: Electric Guitar, Microphone, conga, tambourine, amp

  39. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  40. A: Work with someone that's expensive and fast, not slow and cheap. ;)
