My studio has a HUGE microphone collection (I also produce) ranging from vintage Neumann's to classic ribbon microphones from AEA to punchy dynamics from Shure and Electro-Voice. I also have a large mic pre collection as well (Neve, Retro Instruments, API, CAPI, BAE etc) so the sound you'll get will be world class in every way.

Interview with James Knight
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm very proud of "Man With The Red Face" with Mark Knight. That tune. although recorded a good while ago, still connects with people and tht means a lot to me. I played the saxophone solo.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Just finished touring with Rick Astley.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital but I love analogue.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will give 100% eveytime
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Making people feel something
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: It's easy.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have a particular track that has an influence on what you'd like on your track?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Listen to the playlist and see if we will be a good fit!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Selmer Mark VI alto, Prism D/A, Macbook, Audeze headphones, Solar panels to power it all.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started playing at age 10, went to Chethams School of Music at 16, then Berklee, then Royal Acadamy of Music (1st Class Hon BMus). Been playing for over 40 years
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Versitile enough to adapt, unique enough to stand out
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Prince. Because he was Prince!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Play for the audience, not yourself.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Very varied. Best known for big solo's but very experienced in all fields.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Being adaptable and ALWAYS serve the song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Huge energy, hooks, hooks and errr, hooks!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Recieve your file and discuss what you'd like to hear from me, any choice of microphone etc. Get cracking with the good stuff!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run a busy studio in Morth London and have a remote/mix room at home. Home set up is Prism Sound Lyra into Mac Studio M2 Ultra. Microphones at home include AKG 414EB, Neuman U87 and AEA R84 for ribbon goodness. Main studio has way too much to list but includes pres from Retro Instruments, Neve, Capi, API, a HUGE microphone locker and a ton of gorgeous compression (UREI, SSL, elysia) and Pultec, Neuman and Retro Instruments EQ.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Huge fan of all music, as a saxophone player I love David Sanborn, Kenny Garret, Maceo Parker to name only three!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Often asked to do big hooks and big solo's along with horn section work. Also do horn arranging from 3 piece section up to big band work.
