Interview with Vincent Edwards
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I got to score the trailer for the new Ken Burns doc on Muhammad ALI. I grew up watching Ken Burns Jazz Doc, and ALI was my idol. So we created the entire trailer design based in sounds heard in a boxing ring, from the bell, to the sound of hard hits. It was a dream come to life.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I value every artist and what they want to create and do, so I will pay the utmost attention to what you want.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been a musician since I was a kid. I always loved getting lost in writing a song. But my focus turned to Swing and Jazz - and spent years touring in a swing band, and recoding here in LA. And as I was recording that stuff, I grew a fondness recording arts. Switched over to production and recording full time, and I have been doing that ever since.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Curate sounds you like, over time. This will inform you about the things you like, and by proxy help develop your sound. Collect sounds from everywhere, when you hear an interesting door close, or an interesting elevator ding.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: A mix of everything. I have been really dialed into sound design, K-pop, and EDM recently, but I just got hired to do a Noir Style jazz song so it really does vary.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Working with the artist, nothing makes my happier then fulfilling the vision to it's fullest.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My own aesthetic, I.E. The mix of samples that I have been collecting and building myself for 15 years, that shape the worlds as well as my ability to be versatile and reflect the artist's vision, that is number 1.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Iv'e had my industrial studio since 2017, I work out of a huge production building filled with photo studios, and recording spaces. But we have freedom to create whatever kind of workspace we want, So just recently after in 2022 I redesigned my studio, from your traditional, console desk, with very "Studio" feel to now it's like stepping into the 1920's. Vintage desk design, down to the framing in the room, I redesigned the whole Recording Space to be less of a "Studio" and more of an "Energy." It is a very creative space to let artists go wild in!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Joyryde, Nitepunk, Link, Labrinth, Childish Gambino, Ludwig Goransson, Jacob Collier. I am really inspired by Sonic sculptors, people who are so specific about the worlds they are building, and give you so much texture and energy in that space.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do is trailer scoring, which requires me to tap into a large amount of musical Pallets, anywhere from punk rock, large cinematic scoring, or sometimes only touching on sound design. But, I work with artists from all genre's from Gospel to Bass House.
