Let’s bring your emotions to life through music!

⭐ Over 1 million streams on Spotify! ⭐

I’ve been playing guitar, bass, synthesizer, piano, and drums for over 15 years, so I’ve developed a finely tuned ear. But more than technical skill, I’m a deeply emotional artist—I believe every song should reflect your feelings. Whether it’s a soft, tender mood or hard-hitting aggression, it’s all about capturing the emotion.

I work closely with top record labels in my country, including Sony Music, and I run a professional studio where I handle recording, hybrid mixing, and mastering. My setup includes high-end analog preamps, EQs, and compressors—plus the full suite of premium plugins—so I can deliver top-tier results on any project.

Interview with Mertkan Özkan

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: It depends. For recording, analog preamps and compressors are absolute winners, no doubt about that. But when it comes to mixing, digital gear can be incredibly powerful. Digital isn’t what it used to be. There are some serious companies out there making truly top-tier digital tools. And there’s a real beauty in the simplicity of it. You can reshape an entire channel strip with just a few clicks. Different tools, different strengths.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: Most people think mixing is just a technical, mechanical process. They assume that if you know the theory, you can execute it properly. But mixing has a soul. There’s a huge artistic dimension to it, and it demands a highly trained ear. Not every mixing engineer is able to combine all of those skill sets.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: My Fender Hotrod Telecaster My Fender Supersonic Blonde 22 My Sennheiser MD441-U API The Box 2 ATC SCM100ASL Pro

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Try not to over-do anything you learned recently. Close your eyes and try to imagine what you want to hear. Then go for it!

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: I usually find myself spending time talking with artists about their vision and really trying to understand who they are. I believe that only the artist truly knows what they want to express, even if they can’t always articulate it clearly at first. My role is to help uncover that vision by getting to know them on a deeper level — their influences, their intentions, their emotional connection to the song. The more I understand the artist, the better I can translate their identity into the final sound.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: First, I need to understand what my client needs to hear. Once we clarify the direction and style of the mix, I can decide whether it should lean toward a solid, punchy sound or something more gentle and nuanced. Of course, it always depends on the project, but I usually start with the drums and bass. They form the foundation of the track. From there, I build around them with the other instruments and finally shape the vocals into place.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: Genelec 8040B, Yamaha NS10-M, Apogee Symphony I/O, Universal Audio LA 610 MK-II, Great River ME-1NV, Sequential Prophet-6, Kurzweil K2500X, Fender Telecaster 52 Reissue Hot Rod, Fender Japan Jaguar Bass guitar, Fender Supersonic Blonde 22 Tube Amplifier, Neumann U87, Sennheiser MD441-U,

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I’ve worked on a wide range of projects, from rap to house music. When a genre has strict boundaries, like metal, you usually have a clearer vision of what the mix should sound like. But that’s not the case with more fluid genres like alternative. The possibilities are much wider, which makes the process more challenging but also way more fun to explore. That said, the genre I’ve probably mixed the most is rap.

  17. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  18. A: It was my first single project. I was doing a collaborative work with a disaster mixing engineer. I thought we are failing but I never gave up on myself. Even if I had strict deadlines, took the whole responsibility. I have managed to overcome the obstacles nicely. Then made a huge difference on the mix. Even mastering engineer couldn't believe the updated mix. You can't live without listening to your heart. Well, I can't :)

  19. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  20. A: I am working on a 3 song EP to an emerging band, as a producer and mixing engineer. Also working on my new project

  21. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  22. A: SOUNDBETTER :)

  23. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  24. A: I am being a part of an artistic act. I am touching somebody's dream and soul.

  25. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  26. A: They are generally in love with the demo version of their song. So they ask if I can make it sound more like the demo version. I am giving them a couple of days to rest their hearing and listen to mix afterwards. 90% of the time my clients are preferring the newer version.

  27. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  28. A: What bands are you listening to? What kind of sound are you going after? What is your number 1 and 2 element on your song?

  29. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  30. A: It is all OK if you know what you want.

  31. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  32. A: I started with playing guitar when i was 12. Then met with the DAW's when I was teenager. I have been working with a variety of famous artists and engineers in my country for more than 5 years.

  33. Q: How would you describe your style?

  34. A: I am reuniting the classical retro flavor with modern sounds.

  35. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  36. A: I would like to work with Kevin Parker. Because he can go real crazy with all frequency registers and it still sounds perfect.

  37. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  38. A: Alternative Rock

  39. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  40. A: I am a great communicator. Calibrating my vision to my client's.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: English progressive rock bands with huge sound characteristics like Arctic Monkeys, The Last Shadow Puppets, Temples, Foals, and modern synth monsters like Tame Impala, Pond.
