Interview with Eames
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently engineering a for artists from all over the globe. My most recent project is from an indie musician from Berlin. Times are exciting!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Some styles of music just sound best analog and alternatively some sound better with more of a digital footprint. It is amazing how far technology has come and the variations of workflow that can be approached.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Satisfaction.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The music and client satisfaction.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What I think about their song. I answer honestly and tell that what I can bring to fulfill their vision.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are your influences? I then ask for a few references.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be your most true self. This shines through your artistry.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Mac Pro, SSL Sigma, Focal Twins,
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been a professional engineer since I was in high school.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I have worked in every genre from rock to trap. These days, a lot of indie rock, pop, electronic and hip hop, as well as their sub genres.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Providing separation and clarity to a dense mix.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I glue the song together, provide clarity and isolation between each instrument while maintaining the chemistry between them. at the most professional fidelity. Mold the low end to be heavy and tight, with a dense mid range.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by listening to the demo/rough mix a client sends me, along with references of the songs that influence their style. I’ll listen to these tracks while walking my dog each day and in my car. This gives me the idea of the vibe that the artist is looking to achieve. Then I organize edit and fine tune each track within Pro Tools. This is where the fun begins through setting levels, panning, automation to increase dynamics of the song. Once the song is about all the way there I send a version to the client and revise until satisfactory.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in a hybrid format. I use a Universal Audio Apollo interface, SSL Sigma summing unit, Pro Tools, along with numerous outboard gear and plugins. I used Focal Twin monitors which are incredible.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by the many talented artists that I have the opportunity to work with.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I strive for my clients to be satisfied through putting my all into the mixing and mastering of each record.
