Zolton started in music playing guitar and singing in local bands. He later started mixing music for other artists, initially under the mentorship of Australian mixing legend, David Hemming. Further mixing studies followed at Berklee’s School of Music (The Art of Mixing + Advanced Mixing Techniques).
Zolton now mixes music for a wide range of acts from pop through to synth-wave, acoustic singer-songwriter, and beyond.

Interview with MixedByZolton
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I've met some incredible talent through Soundbetter, many of whom I've worked with regularly. I love the keyboard and piano chops of Michael Arrom. The guy is super creative, awesome to work with and always sends through inspiring parts. Vinzenz Benjamin is a phenomenal bass-player. And I'm in awe of Jarrett Johnson's vocal skills. He is truly world class and I highly recommend his services.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a dedicated mixing studio in inner-city Sydney with good room treatment and quality monitors (Dynaudio BM5s and Supercube 5s along with an Avantone grot for mono checks). I mix fully in the box and keep across the latest releases in plugin land to make sure I'm always using the best available options.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I've been lucky enough to have some of the world's best mixing engineers work their magic on my own music over the years. Bob Clearmountain was one and he continues to inspire, especially with his creative approach to shaping a mix. Tony Hoffer is another brilliant mixer who has worked on my music and has always been happy to share his thoughts on his approach to creating great music. And the legend that is David Kershenbaum co-produced a song with me a couple of years back and that was both a fascinating and inspiring experience, witnessing his attention to detail and his almost incessant perfectionism. It was easy to understand why he's been so successful for so long.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mix music across a variety of genres. Because of my experience as a producer/songwriter, I'm able to input creatively where needed on songs, but I'm equally happy taking what's sent through to me and just polishing it up to sound awesome. Generally I'll spend time at the outset checking and fixing any timing and tuning issues and making sure everything is lined up perfectly. Then I'll get stuck into the fun part of pulling all the pieces together to create the final mix.
