Q: What do you bring to a song?

A: Vocally I think a unique sound and the ability to convey emotion. Productionwise - modern dance production that sounds slick and well made.

Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

A: Quite a mix! For vocals country and pop. For production typically more dance or synth pop.

Q: What's your typical work process?

A: For vocal work it's typically recording to the backing track, comping, tuning & processing. For production I normally start with the vocal / song idea and build the production around that. I usually try more than one route to see which is strongest. Sometimes people give me stems of a half produced track and in that case I might use some bits of their production but then go through upgrading sections. Once the production itself is in place and we're both happy with it then I would move on to improving the mixing. For some tracks we then still use a third party mix engineer because a second pair of ears on a mix occasionally can yield an even better result.

Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

A: I'm UAD based so have an apollo twin and a wide selection of UAD plugins for enhancing the audio I work with. MIc is a Neumann U87 which I find to be the best suited to my voice. Mainly use Ableton for production and Logic X for recording vocals. For tuning I have a few options but find the best results come from Revoice Pro. It's so subtle that you don't hear obvious autotune artifacts.

Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

A: Vocally I'm inspired by country singers like Brett Young, Dan & Shay, etc. and also by pop singers like Khalid. Producers - the obvious big names in dance and pop production: Zedd, Martin Garrix, benny blanco, and maybe some less obvious ones like Camelphat, Jax Jones.

Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

A: For vocal work I'll typically get to understand the message of the song first, then suggest some melody / writing variations (if wanted) and record a first pass for the review. Once the final melody option is agreed I'll record a release ready, tuned vocal. Happy to add to existing backing vocals and use my equipment to tune and enhance vocals - have spent the last few years acquiring plugins!
