Jordan Astra on SoundBetter

I work in Melbourne, Australia as a Producer, Engineer and Recording Artist having done so for the past 4 years. As a Producer and Artist, I pride myself in my ability to work a song from start to finish and make hits. Biggest achievement is 2019's 'Showcase Tour' Winner where I took home $50,000USD and a 20 City US Tour after I performed in LA.

I can help produce your song which includes instrumentation, mixing, arrangements, harmonies and whatever else you may need. A part of my speciality is also bringing in the right people when it's needed.

If you need someone to perform particular parts to pitch your demo, to come up with creative melodies, hooks or even have me as a feature on your record, more than happy to do so.

I am a self-taught mixing engineer and work directly with Melbourne and Sydney's top mixing and mastering engineers to complete all my projects. This means you get full access to my contacts at my rates.

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Interview with Jordan Astra

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: ASTRO. It's my last EP which came out April of 2018. It was a real coming of age moment to put out an entire project that was written, produced, performed, recorded and engineered by me.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My next album 'Hourglass' which comes out November 27th, 2020.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Everyone I've previously worked with to be honest, that's why I was so motivated to be a provider as well: It's the kind of people I like dealing with.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Analog has dynamics and characteristics that Digital doesn't have and vice versa.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Underpromise, over deliver.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: It doesn't feel like work.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What's your rate? It starts with a love for the record or concept then we can discuss fees.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I do this for clout.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Tell me about the record? What's the goal of the record? Is this a part of a bigger project for you? Who are your influences? Who would you like to hear this song? When is the project due? Anything else you need from me at this stage?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Hire me to give me a shot at an affordable rate. Take a look at my music to understand that what I do, has been done by me from start to finish. If you want a consistent sound, a clean mix and a smile on your face, I'm your guy.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: iphone, solar panel, laptop + charger, keyboard, monitors

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been professionally making music for 4 years but I have been behind the scenes for almost half my life.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Smooth and feel good.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Pharrell Williams. His career, knowledge, connections and insight to the music industry would be a fantastic opportunity to grown and flourish as a Producer and Artist.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: A lot of the time, less is more: Let the rhythm, harmony and melody of a song work together and not against each other. Give sounds the space they deserve.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Nu Disco, Pop, Hip Hop, Sould and RnB

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Customer Service. My focus is to make the client happy and then means you do what they want and what they feel is right, not necessarily what you think is the best approach to a song or its mix.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring my taste and sound to each of the songs I work on. I'm at very early stages in my career where if an artist or producer wants to work with me, it will be because they have a specific idea in mind, so my responsibility will be to treat them as a client and deliver what they need. Overtime the goal will be to create enough hit records that I can start introducing my taste and sound to these records.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like working in Logic Pro X because my workflow is efficient and relatively quick. I have a fluent understanding in my hot keys to make sure sessions for artists are quick and concise. When I'm not recording, I'm producing and mixing and I try and move on to various parts of the song to stay inspired and to not feel fatigued or even restless with a song.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I mix on EVE Audio SC205 and reference with Focal Elears for my monitor setup. I record using a Shure Sm7B and a Focusrite ISA one Preamp for my recording combination. My DAW is Logic Pro X and I use Waves Central, Splice and Soundtoys as my main sources for VST's, Plugins and Engineering tools.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Pharrell Williams, Jamiroquai, Zero 7, Leslie Braithwaite, Daft Punk, Bruno Mars, Free Nationals, Anderson Paak

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Music Production overall. I specialise in Hip Hop, Soul, RnB and Pop
