Interview with MariaGrig
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen to the song and try to envision what type of strings will fit better and what needs to be done in terms of arranging. Then I'll start arranging the general strings idea and then work on details. Every part of the process will be confirmed with the client and any changes will be applied. Whenever we are ready with arranging I'll move on to the recording.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: David Garrett, Stephan Grappelli, Hans Zimmer, Joshua Bell, Miri Ben-Ari
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I've recorded my orchestral piece at Warner brothers studio. My role was composer/orchestrator/editor/conductor/strings player. Simply an amazing experience!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I've got many mics for slightly different sound options AKG414, AT4040, AT4081, Octava MKL5000 (valve mic). My preamp is custom made and is called M31. I'm using Pro Tools and Motu Ultralite Hybrid MK3 sound card. Everything you hear on my soundcloud was recorded with this setup.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love staying at home and working on different styles and for different parts of the world every day! I love to bring something new to the song.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: C: Could you add strings do my song? Me: YES! C: How many strings do you think it needs? Me: It depends on your expectations. If you want the song to sound intimate it can be a solo instrument. If you want an orchestral effect I would recommend and arrangement of 1st&2nd violins and violas or a string quartet.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The only misconception (but a good one really) is that customers think it's magic. However it's a skill which just took many many years to get developed.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I'm asking for any kind of guide. Just a few words on what they'd like to get from me, what they think their song needs. If there's no guide I can suggest my own ideas. The bpm (if it exists) and the desired format as well.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Please feel free to get in touch and don't hesitate to ask any questions!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Violin, macbook pro, motu soundcard, AT4081 mic and mic stand
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Playing violin/viola for more than 20 years. Composing&arranging for around 15 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Emotional with passion
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: With everyone who believes in strings power
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I'm doing sessions almost every day and creating recording templates is just the best time saver ever. Do it!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Songs in pop/rock/indie styles, acoustic songs, cinematic orchestral scores/soundstracks, classical
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Arrangement and violin/viola playing
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: It depends on the song. I'm trying to hear what the song is asking for. Most of my clients think that my strings add depth/dramatic effect/big orchestral impact or something more intimate/atmospheric.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Online violin/viola/cello/string quartet/string quintet recordings and arrangements
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Fashion show for Polina Raudson fashion house and touring with Neoclassica ensemble.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I am VOCAL. This guy is the best! Very creative and inspiring to work with.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog in dreams. Digital in reality.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will do my best to make you happy with the result! Any suggestions and changes desired will be done!
