Interview with Sabot Studio

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: There is a record I mixed for a local oriental arab/israeli band which Im really happy about how it turned out. that record caused a shift in my mixing abilities

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: at this very moment I got drums recording sessions for a record

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I know one great violin player on Soundbetter

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: mix of both. this is what makes it special

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: that they will get a great deep mix suited to their wishes (as far as they have)

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love mixing. to me mixing is like taking divided parts and unifying then into a whole, so in the end is like one unit. to me thats beautiful. and of course when the artist is happy with the result is very satisfying

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Customers ask me if they can listen to my previous works and then I send them links. I get great feedbacks which makes me happy

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Maybe that a mix can magically turn a terrible recording to sound great

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Whats the volume of the project, how many songs, how many channels on each song, what are their ideas of how it should sound like, references

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Have a good recording in your hands, everything stats there!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Gibson SG guitar, Orange amp, Bayern Dynamic 770 headphones, macbook pro and interface. oh, can I add a little mic too? :)))

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started to mess around with DAWs 20 years ago. studied 2 years in a sound academy in Tel Aviv, then I went to work at a local studio. I moved to Berlin in 2017 and played with some bands all across Germany. here I started my own studio 5 years ago and done some records for local artists.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: up to date with a sympathy to the vintage. presence and past. punchy, airy, warm, hopefully bold :)

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: good rock bands. I can mostly relate to that

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Figure out the emotion of the song that you produce. connect with the lyrics and try to translate the inner feeling of the artist into the audio production

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I´ve done some oriental/world music but I´d love to have more Rock as it is my favorite style of music

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: creating the right groove for the song

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Motion and groove are very important to me in the mix. I´ll create the dynamics and sound envelopes that work good together for the groove of the song. then I´ll create depth and a 3D feeling in the mix.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: When mixing I´d usually recognize the main element of the song, or what makes the song kicking and I´ll treat it first, then I´d mix everything else around it. if its a band playing, I´d usually start with the drums, make them punchy and airy and then add the bass and so on.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Im running Cubase or Ableton on a macbook pro. my Tascam interface is wired through an analog console and outboard gear like compressor/gate, tube preamp, reverb/delay, and then I´d combine those with hi end plugins.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: soundwise Im getting inspired from the likes of Randall Dunn, Tame Impala, I like the combination of punch and roughness.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Mixing
