Interview with Chris Frymire

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: Since 1979, stage hand, touring sound engineer, house sound engineer, record company exec, mastering, recording, mixing.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: Metric Halo interfaces/converters (ULN8, 2882(x3), ULN-2), DP, Peak, Myriad, Triumph, DDP-Creator, + JBL, Auratone, Polk, B&W Monitoring, Halfler and McIntosh amplification. Lots of mics and assorted outboard gear. My house live setup is MIdas L3000, Klark Tech EQs, TC Electronic and Lexicon verbs, EV mains and mons. My touring/portable choices are Venue or Midas console, l'acoustics or d&b mains.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: Satisfaction with my work and a fair price.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Listening to new music, the job is "professional listener" after all.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That perfection is more important than "vibe/feel/soul" and the message. Music is an emotional communication method, if the song doesn't connect with the listeners, it doesn't matter how pristine the mix is.

  12. A: Listen to my previous work, come on down to a show and hear me mix!

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Metric Halo 2882 (firewire buss powered), Mac Laptop, KSM 44, Earthworks M30, MDRv6 headphones.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Laid back, but professional.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Get it right at the source, then don't mess it up.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Americana, roots, folk, world, jazz, ethnic.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: Live FOH Mixing

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
