Interview with DaStrouds

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: MCKNY single "Already Gone ft Bizzy Bone" at the time MCKNY came to use she didn't have much going on. We produced the single for her, Got Bizzy Bone to feature and last I checked that song was well over 1 million views. Her project is amazing and going to be great!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: We have a few big projects in the works right now. I can't disclose the artist, but once its released its going to be HUGE (Donald Trump's voice)

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I have lots of sound better friends. I love them all equally.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Analog for the sounds and digital for the mix. There is not a plug-in on the planet that can reproduce the THICK warm sound of my Moog. And digital for the mix for the recall and the effects.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Your going to be happy, and your gonna love the records we deliver.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Q:How long does the process take A: Normally we get the first draft out in 48-72 hours Q:How do you handle revisions A: Were not happy until we delivery on your revision, if its not right we make the changes until your vision is achieved.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That you can do a record in 10 minutes. Sure maybe you can get a decent melody down in 10 minutes that becomes the main drive for the record, But its much much much more involved than that. Some times I might spend 2 hours on a snare making sure its perfect!

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What is your vision for the project. How do you want your audience to receive the record?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Go with your gut, make sure they're putting your music 1st and treating your project the same way they would approach a Beyonce project.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Antelope Audio 10MX a clock, Its a $6,500 audio clock that just keeps time... and its worth every penny. Mac book Pro, Antelope Audio Synergy core, Jupiter X keyboard, and out Manley Reference C mic. And were leaving off that island with multiple master pieces!

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: Well over 10 years, collectivly much more than that. Most of us started as musicians which evolved into mixing engineers and along the way you pick up different skills. Now ere a one stop shop.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Tenacious, catch a vibe, execute on those ideas and deliver.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Alabama Shakes, Nas, Adele, Jon Lennon. They're awesome.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Song Design over Sound Design. Capture the vibe while it's flowing. A vibe is like a wave, and the producer is like a surfer. Don't get to caught up on which exact synth to use vs which melody. Just get the idea down and then go back and tweak.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: All genres, Pop, Rap, R&B mostly.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Efficiency, by that I mean to capture great ideas while the vibes are flowing. We accomplish this by having a talented team that runs like a machine 24/7.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Great minds, Innovation, IDEAS. Its always to keep in mind "What does the client want" this keeps us on track and ensures we get the results that the client is looking for.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: The process always starts with a team meeting. What are we working on and what are we trying to accomplish. Most importantly what does the client want, or how do they want their audience to feel when they hear the record. From we come up with a game plan and execute for the client.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: We are nerds and major gear heads. Our studio is our sanctuary, We have compressors that cost as much as cars, I say that to say there is no limit to what we invest into our business. The studio space was contructed to have a major vibe. A loft space with a Manhattan view, Hue lighting and in-wall speakers systems in every room. We may be working on a track in our A room, Recording a song in our B room while a writing session is taking place in another room. Its the best vibes on earth.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: We listen to and enjoy all types of music. Anytime I hear an artist that is attempting tp go against the grain and be innovative, its always inspiring.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Now days the lines are very blurred when it comes to genres. Just look at Lil Was X, he broke through with some would call a country song, others would say it's hiphop. We produce just as much hiphop as we do pop/ top 10esq sounding records.

  43. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  44. A: Its not a job, this is our lives. This is all we know and all we do.
