Jason Boshoff on SoundBetter

Credits with David Gray, Rufus Wainwright, Josh Groban and more, I am a Mercury Music Awards and MPG nominated producer and mixer specialising in the alt and indie genres. Alt-pop, rock and folk.

Send me your demo, whether it’s simply voice and guitar or a full recording, and I will suggest a creative direction either in writing or with an initial programmed sketch. From there I will record, program and arrange your track ready for final vocals and mix.

Budgets are flexible according to your requirements and situation. You will not find a more affordable route to production and musicianship of this level.

I am fortunate to have developed my skills in both traditional and modern production environments. I have tracked to 2” tape on the Studer A80 and recorded and mixed through both Neve VR and SSL G, E and K series boards and have completed productions entirely in-the-box using Pro Tools, Logic and Reaper.

As engineer and programmer I have worked on multi-million selling records for artists such as David Gray and Josh Groban. I have produced and mixed a mercury nominated album (Lisa Hannigan - Sea Sew 2009), been nominated as break-through producer of the year (UK MPG awards 2010) and won best producer and best rock album in China (Tan Wei Wei - The Tortoise and the Achilles 2013).

Some notable past clients: The Basement Jaxx, Elbow, Rufus Wainwright and Gabriella Cilmi. I now focus on remote production and mixing providing top level productions to independent artists around the world.

Send me a note through the contact button above.

Once again, Jason and his team delivered. He produced an awesome album for Catlea. We couldn't ask for a better producer. 5 Stars. Highly recommended.

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Jason. He has a great understanding of what the other party wants, adds a lot of great ideas to a vision and delivers excellent quality. Jason keeps on going until the goal is reached, the result aimed for, which made me feel very comfortable. I'm very proud and happy with the 10 songs he mixed and mastered and if he isn't tired of our music yet, I'm sure we'll work with him again shortly!

I have worked with Jason on a few projects and he is by far one of the best mix engineers I have had the pleasure of working with. He is attentive to details, an excellent communicator, sensitive to deadlines, and the end results are always brilliant. I especially have been pleased with how good he is at making vocals sit well in a mix.

Working with Jason wonderful. He is a great engineer and bought some ideas to my production. Working remotely requires some patience but I was happy with the finish

Jason is an absolute legend. He has taken me on a journey from that first listen to the bag of ideas I had, through coaching and teaching me to believe in myself, to bringing my songs to life with his brilliant house band and amazing production. He’s realised the ambition of my lifetime and been a constant source of counsel, encouragement, humour and friendship during lockdown. Always supportive and always coaching, Jason has taught me so much and brought out the best in me. Thanks mate.

There's no better feeling than when you and your mix engineer totally agree on what your drums should sound like, and your mix engineer gets it right the first time, every time :) Everything else can just fall into place from there. Thanks as always!

Super happy with Jason's work - my song sounds way better than when I sent it to him.

This is the first time I've ever had a song mixed and mastered. Jason was understanding of my total rookie status and explained things in a way I could understand...

Imo he does great work and is great to work with... can't ask for much more than that.

Speaking from where I am as an independent, self-produced solo artist early in his career (and so this review is aimed at others in a similar situation), working with Jason this past year has made me three years better in the span of one. I think it comes down to a rare combination of three things that you'll be hard-pressed to find in one person: genuine, great taste, and insanely competent. When you have someone like that getting your music ready for primetime, uh, yeah... it's gonna be good.

This man is the real deal, just hire him. He takes his time, and then gives you a taste of what he's doing to your track. And somehow he has managed to match the sounds you've envisioned for your track in your own mind. Just incredible. Do yourself a favor and give him your track.

Jason Bashoff is my current hero. We started on this EP before the pandemic broke out. Through all the changes we all had to make in our personal lives Jason never wavered. My life goal of launching my own project has been realized. Jason was beyond professional. He did things for my project that went far and beyond the duties of a mix engineer. He had to do some shouldering and did it with class. I will be forever grateful for Jason being the one to turn my dream into a reality.

Jason was wonderful to work with. Consistently quick to react. He understood what we were going for and had a couple of great ideas on his own that improved on what we had in mind. End result turned out great, and we will be working with him more in the future for sure.

Interview with Jason Boshoff

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: https://soundbetter.com/profiles/70302-toni-mateos

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: Producing an award winning Chinese pop rock album in Beijing stands out as quite an achievement - Best Rock Album and Best Producer awards! More recently I enjoyed personal satisfaction helping AMOS realise his vision by transforming a traditional live band production into a contemporary...uhm..masterpiece!

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I started DJing as a teenager and became obsessed with production, consuming all the information I could - no internet so I read magazines by the 100s! By 20 I had written and produced a #1 track in my home city, Cape Town. I hooked up with a local studio and started to programme and assist, learning about live recording. At 24 I moved to London and hustled until I got a job at Battery Studios as in house engineer. Battery was closed down two years later and I moved to A&R at Jjive Records then BMG as assistant to the head of A&R. Though a great insight to the major label process, I had to return to the studio! I trialled as assistant to producer Marius de Vries which lead to 5 years working as his programmer and engineer as well as many sessions working under mixer Andy Bradfield. I simultaneously began working freelance, with artists such as Lisa Hannigan and The Basement Jaxx, recording, mixing and producing. My client list grew and I started to travel a lot more, New York, Cuba, Ireland, Belgium...at 40 I'm still at it, so 25 years in music now!

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: I've arrived at a compact setup that gives me just what I want. Pro Tools and Reaper running on a Mac. I work on headphones a lot (Sony MDR7506's) as it allows me to complete jobs practically anywhere. I've packed away most of my monitors, all but a trusty pair of NS-10s powered by a classic British Quad amp. Conversion is handled by Apogee and Schiit Audio (a fantastic DAC manufacturer from the US). I have plenty of plugins with a penchant for distortion! Kush Audio, Brainworx, Unfiltered Audio, uhmm, Slate, Waves etc.

  9. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  10. A: I just finished the production and mix for an artist/band called Colourshop. I also have an ongoing project called Lemote which releases new material weekly.

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: Digital because I can be incredibly efficient.

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: I won't stop until I'm satisfied I have challenged their expectations.

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: Nailing a mix and receiving a message from a client that reads, "You're a genius!!! I absolutely love the mix!!!!"

  17. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  18. A: Will you take a listen to my track and tell me what you think? A resounding yes!

  19. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  20. A: That equipment leads to great results.

  21. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  22. A: I like to understand a clients motivations and influences. Questions like, what do you plan to do with the music, and which artist or song has a sound that inspires you?

  23. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  24. A: Communicate first, ask questions and get comfortable before committing. The magic only happens when a provider's ideas are in line with the customer's.

  25. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  26. A: Uhm, do I have electricity?! Laptop, interface, headphones, satellite wifi and a midi keyboard!

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: Energetic and somewhat aggressive.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: I want to work with artists who feel they are missing something, whether they are established and successful or just getting started.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Distortion is key for me. Break a song by exploring the improbable, then rest your ears regularly whilst slowly putting it all back together again until balance is restored, balance is everything. And pay attention because the magic is fleeting, don't blink!

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: I tend to swing between a more traditional band or acoustic aesthetic and a sound that is more far reaching, layered, with programmed drums and synths all over the place!

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: Both in music and in life I naturally make things work with what I have available. I see the potential in everything. In music, I've refined this instinct to a skill that enables me to add value, often in some very unexpected ways.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: Energy and a fresh perspective. I'm not very comfortable with "normal" so I love to emphasise character, the distinguishing element of a voice, arrangement or song.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: I listen to a song once and assess my initial feeling. I quickly note what's missing and commit that sensation to memory. Then it's time to talk to the artist! Here I discover their ambitions and put forward my ideas. If it's a production I tend to create a sketch, a lot of which becomes the final product! When mixing I receive parts and create a first pass that get's us 80% there and demonstrates my intention. Then it's time for the details.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: In the mixing world the I've always admired the work of Spike Stent and Toni Maserati, UK vs US! Paul Epworth is total class

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Definitely mixing. If I produce for an artist I tend to mix too so it stands to reason I mix more!
