Pranav Datla on SoundBetter

Mixing/Mastering Engineer from NYC. Specializes in all genres of music from classical/jazz, rock/metal, pop/hip-hip and everything in between. I love manipulating sound to bring out the best emotional character of the music. I've trained at the Conservatoire de Paris, Columbia University, and the Manhattan School of Music. Finest and top detail.

I am a professional musician with experience in mixing and mastering for film and pop music, producing for pop artists, songwriting, and much more.

I love every aspect of music making. Whether you need a producer, a beat, a mix or master for you, it would be my honor to work on a project with you.

I know how on point every aspect of a record needs to be in order to make it a hit. This is why I offer services from just vocal editing to full on music productions with mixing and mastering.

I also do editing and tuning vocals to be PERFECT with Melodyne and Voc-Align which is a must for professional records.

My main specialty these days is mastering which I have been perfecting for a long time. This is my most powerful service and I offer for such a low rate because I truly want to work on as many records as possible regardless of the artists' budget.

Interview with Pranav Datla

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I was the tracking engineer, mixer, and mastering engineer for my close friend X the Outkast who is dropping his album in 2022. Best lyricist I've ever heard and such an authentic talent. Very hyped for him.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working on multiple independent albums and 2 big label projects that I can't reveal anything about but I am super excited.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Plenty of great talent on here...

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Fine strokes with digital and some nice broad moves with analog go really nice.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will go my hardest to bring your track to the next level in any way I can. I do this out of love and respect for the game.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Making the artists/clients super happy and even more excited about their music.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How long does it take you to master 1 track? -It takes 45 mins-2 hrs for me not including revisions.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That engineering is technical and not creative.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Did you work your hardest on this piece? It is genuine?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Make sure your believe in what you're doing!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: UAD Apollo Twin, Laptop, Midi controller, Mojave MA-1000, Headphones.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: 15 years! Worked with mostly amateurs and some professionals. Couple superstars but I don't like to name names. I let the sounds do the talking.

  36. A: Years of passion, knowledge, experience, and love for the craft. A broad skillset in which I excel at a few but very important things. Anything you need I can offer some valuable input.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I make sure that I keep my overall physical and mental health in good shape to be able to work with full focus. I work as much as I can but give my ears regular breaks. Between masters I'll step out of the room and walk around for a minute. Maybe drink some water. I'll review things in multiple environments to ensure a consistent mix/master and really tweak things till I feel everything is exceptionally dialed in.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Very simple. Massive CPU power, UAD plugins/FabFilter, few but excellent hardware pieces. I have some excellent software I made myself. Great microphones, guitars, and synths etc. Gear is not too important ;)

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Frank Dukes, Dave Kutch, Mike Dean, MixedbyAli, Mike Bozzi, Tom Elmhirst, Illangelo, to name just a few!

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
