Interview with Julianne Hope
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m especially proud of producing Tayla Parx’s “More Me Than Ever,” which was featured globally in TJ Maxx’s 2025 campaign. I co-wrote and produced the track, shaping the lyrics, melody, and full production to create a song that’s both emotionally resonant and commercially polished. This project was particularly rewarding because it reached a global audience and allowed me to fully showcase my multi-instrumental, production, and songwriting skills in a high-profile placement.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now, I’m writing and producing music for my own artist project, Julianne Hope, while also creating songs for film and TV placements. I focus on crafting emotionally engaging, melody-driven tracks that are both commercially polished and creatively inspired.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I’m always discovering talented collaborators on SoundBetter, and I would recommend anyone whose work aligns with the project’s needs. For example, I value engineers, mixers, and session musicians who bring creativity, technical expertise, and reliability—team members who elevate a song while keeping the artist’s vision at the center. I believe finding the right collaborators is key to making a track truly shine.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I work in a hybrid setup, using both analog and digital tools to get the best of both worlds. Digital allows me precision, flexibility, and efficiency in editing, arranging, and producing, while analog instruments and gear—like guitars, basses, and live tracking—bring warmth, character, and organic feel to the music. Combining the two lets me create tracks that are both polished and full of life. :)
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to clients is to fully bring their vision to life while elevating it with my expertise. I commit to delivering emotionally resonant, melody-driven, and commercially polished songs, whether through collaborative sessions or independently crafted demos. I ensure every track is thoughtfully developed, professionally produced, and tailored to make the artist shine.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my job is the magic of taking an idea or emotion and turning it into a song that really resonates. I love seeing an artist’s face light up when a melody, lyric, or production element clicks, and I get a lot of joy from experimenting on my own before bringing fresh ideas to them. Every project feels like a chance to create something meaningful and lasting.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Customers most commonly ask about my approach, how I collaborate with artists, and what I can contribute to a song. I explain that I can work both collaboratively in real time or independently on a draft/demo before bringing it back to them. I also answer questions about my experience, notable credits, and my workflow for crafting lyrics, melodies, arrangements, and production that are emotionally resonant and commercially polished.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that a producer or songwriter just “adds ideas” or simply records tracks. In reality, I help shape the entire song—lyrics, melody, arrangement, and production—while guiding the artist’s vision and ensuring every element connects emotionally and commercially. It’s about crafting a complete, polished track, not just contributing isolated pieces.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When speaking with prospective clients, I ask questions to understand their vision, goals, and the emotional tone they want for the song. I typically ask about the artist’s influences, the intended audience, any references or examples they love, and whether they want a collaborative or more independent approach. I also clarify the scope of the project, such as whether they need full production, songwriting support, or both, to ensure I can deliver exactly what they’re looking for.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: When hiring a producer or songwriter, look for someone who can bring both creativity and strategy to your project. Choose a provider who not only has technical skills in lyrics, melody, and production but also understands how to elevate your vision, push your ideas further, and make the song connect with listeners. Don’t be afraid to ask about their approach—collaboration, independent demos, and multi-instrumental contributions can make a huge difference in the final track.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were on a desert island and could take just five pieces of gear, I’d bring my Apollo Twin interface, Shure SM7B, acoustic Martin guitar, 12-string Fender, and one of my Fender Telecasters. These pieces give me everything I need to record vocals, play multiple instruments, and create fully realized demos or polished tracks, no matter the situation.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my career as a touring drummer, which gave me a deep understanding of rhythm, arrangement, and performance. I’ve since transitioned into producing and songwriting, developing a versatile skill set that spans lyrics, melody, and production. Over the years, I’ve worked with high-profile artists and placements, including Tayla Parx’s “More Me Than Ever” for TJ Maxx, and built a reputation for creating emotionally resonant, commercially polished pop music. I’ve been professionally writing and producing for [X years—insert your actual number of years], and I continue to push creative boundaries while helping artists bring their visions to life.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style blends pop/punk energy with polished Top 40 pop, creating songs that are emotionally engaging, melody-driven, and commercially ready. I like to combine raw, authentic expression with dynamic production and live instrumentation, giving each track a unique voice while keeping it accessible and memorable for listeners.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with an artist like Sabrina Carpenter because of her ability to blend strong pop sensibilities with emotional depth. I’m drawn to artists who push creative boundaries while connecting with listeners, and collaborating with someone like her would be an opportunity to craft songs that are both relatable and commercially polished.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One tip I always follow is to treat the arrangement as part of the storytelling. Every instrument, vocal layer, and sound effect should serve the emotion of the song—less is often more. Even small changes, like pulling a backing instrument out for a verse or adding a subtle texture in the chorus, can make a track feel dynamic and keep the listener engaged from start to finish.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on pop music, often blending Top 40 sensibilities with pop/punk energy. I enjoy creating songs that are emotionally engaging, melody-driven, and commercially polished, and I often incorporate live instruments and dynamic production to make each track feel vibrant and unique.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my ability to seamlessly contribute to every element of a song—lyrics, melody, and production—while keeping the artist’s vision at the forefront. I’m equally comfortable shaping a song collaboratively in real time or developing a fully realized demo independently, ensuring each track is emotionally resonant, commercially polished, and ready for release.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a rare combination of skills to every song—strong lyricism, memorable melodies, and polished production. With my multi-instrumental background, I can add depth and texture to arrangements, creating dynamic and engaging tracks. I also bring a strategic ear for what connects with listeners, blending emotional authenticity with commercial appeal, and I tailor my approach to enhance the artist’s vision while elevating the song to its fullest potential.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process is flexible and tailored to each artist. I often start by collaborating one-on-one to understand their vision, style, and goals for the song. From there, I’ll either work alongside them in real time or develop a draft independently—creating a demo or example that brings fresh ideas to the table. I focus on crafting lyrics, melodies, and production elements that balance emotional depth with commercial appeal, refining the track until it’s polished and ready for release. Throughout the process, I remain highly collaborative, ensuring the artist’s voice and vision are always at the center.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: setup includes an Apollo Twin interface and a Shure SM7B for pristine vocal capture, alongside a collection of instruments including an acoustic Martin, a 12-string Fender, a Fender bass, and two Fender Telecasters. This combination allows me to track vocals and live instruments, program production elements, and deliver polished, release-ready tracks while staying flexible to the creative needs of each artist.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I draw inspiration from producers and songwriters who push the boundaries of pop while maintaining emotional authenticity. Artists like Max Martin, Greg Kurstin, and Linda Perry influence my approach to crafting unforgettable melodies and polished productions. I’m also inspired by multi-instrumentalists and producers who seamlessly blend genres, like Jack Antonoff and Mark Ronson, as well as my peers in the pop/punk space who bring raw energy and honesty to their work.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily produce and co-write pop songs, helping artists shape their music from concept to final production. I love collaborating one-on-one, but I also enjoy developing a song independently—creating a fully realized draft, example, or demo to bring back to the artist. This approach allows me to contribute fresh ideas while keeping the project aligned with their vision. My work often involves crafting lyrics, melodies, and arrangements that balance emotional depth with commercial appeal, and I frequently contribute multi-instrumentally to ensure every track is polished and release-ready.
