Interview with Laky Fernando
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently had the privilege of producing, mixing, and mastering a custom backing medley track for a local artist entering a major music competition. The arrangement needed to be highly dynamic with 4 different genres to support their performance and punchy enough to translate perfectly on a massive live PA system. Watching them take that track all the way to the finals and ultimately win the entire competition was an incredible experience. It perfectly captures why I do this - giving artists the absolute best sonic foundation so they can step onto the stage with total confidence and deliver a winning performance.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently I'm working on some local studio projects.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Matty Harris, Austin Leeds, Sefi Carmel.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, hands down. Working in the box allows for total recall, infinite flexibility, and surgical precision across complex sessions without sacrificing a single ounce of warmth. With top-tier plugins and conversion today, you get the absolute best of both worlds—unmatched workflow speed, pristine clarity, and the freedom to push creative boundaries further and faster.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To treat your art with the same relentless care and passion I would give my own, locking in a professional, radio-ready finish while fiercely protecting the emotional heartbeat of what you recorded.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: (1) "How many revisions are included?" My answer: I include a generous set of revisions because collaboration is a process, but clarity upfront keeps us moving forward smoothly toward the final vision. (2) "What do you need from me to get started?" My answer: Clean, uncompressed audio stems or multitracks exported from your DAW at your tracking sample rate and bit depth, along with a rough mix and your favorite reference tracks. (3) "What is your typical turnaround time?" My answer: It depends on the scope of the project, but I always lock down a firm deadline before we start so you can plan your release schedule with total confidence. (4) "Can you make my mix sound as loud as commercial releases?" My answer: Absolutely—we will get it fully competitive and punchy for streaming platforms while keeping its dynamic life intact so it doesn't get crushed or fatigued. (5) "How do we communicate throughout the project?" My answer: We stay in close touch right here on the platform or via email, ensuring you're looped in at every major milestone so there are zero surprises at the finish line.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that mixing and mastering are just technical patch jobs or math equations—fixing a frequency here, turning up a vocal there, or slapping a preset on a master bus to make it loud. In reality, it is deeply psychological and creative work. It’s about protecting the emotional weight, vulnerability, and raw pulse of a song that an artist poured months of their life into, translating a feeling into sound so that when someone presses play, it hits them right in the chest.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: (1) Handing me the exported stems with correct sample rate & bit depth. (2) What is the final deadline for the project? (3) Do you have any reference songs or tracks that capture the sonic direction you are aiming for? (4) What LUFS, sample rate, bit depth do you want your exported stems delivered in?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: When hiring me as your provider, lean into trust and faith in their craft, and pair it with patience. Handing over your raw stems can feel vulnerable, so you want to build a genuine creative partnership where you can step back, trust their process, and give them the space to elevate your vision without rushing the art. Therefore I'm happy to talk and discuss!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: UAD Apollo interface, Genelec 8351B Nearfields + woofer, Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X headphones, Neumann U 87 Ai Microphone, SSL UF8 DAW Controller (optional). With these I would need a high performing PC setup.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The absolute best part is taking a rough, unpolished mix that an artist has poured their heart into and watching it transform into a finished record that hits you right in the chest. Knowing that I helped protect an artist's vulnerability and brought their exact vision to life.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My journey in music began in 2005 as a live vocalist and keyboardist. Over nearly two decades of hands-on experience, that initial passion for performance naturally evolved into music production, sound design, and ultimately, specialized expertise as a UK Pearson–qualified Mix & Master Engineer.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Disciplined through meticulous attention to detail, my style bridges pristine technical precision with raw emotional impact. Delivering a rich, highly polished, and commercially competitive mix that translates flawlessly across any system while keeping the artist's unique creative identity entirely intact.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Collaborating with Coldplay, Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber would be a dream. Their ability to blend organic acoustic elements, soaring live vocals, and intricate electronic sound design into a cohesive, massive soundstage is unmatched. Also I admire the producers like Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre, Max Martin, and Rick Rubin, who fundamentally shaped pop, hip-hop, rock, and electronic genres through groundbreaking studio techniques, hit-making prowess, and distinct sonic aesthetics.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always calibrate your ears against top-tier reference tracks in your target genre. Paying close attention to how different genres approach tonal balance.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Reggae, Rock, Funk, World, Country, Gospel.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My absolute strongest skill is dialing in immaculate overall tonal balance, with a core specialization in crafting low-end clarity and commanding vocal presence. I excel at carving out tight, high-impact low end—giving the kick and bass punch, warmth, and translation without muddying the mix. Guided by deep frequency visualization and strategic stereo widening.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a balance of musical, technical precision, and commercial polish to every project. I focus on uncovering the emotional core of a song—refining the groove, carving out space for crisp, upfront vocal arrangements, and building dynamic contrast that keeps listeners engaged from start to finish.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Rigorous session organization—color-coding, cleaning, and logic-grouping all incoming audio and stems to build a clean visual layout. From there, I route channels into dedicated mix buses (Drums, Bass, Instruments, Vocals) where I shape overall tone, depth, and dynamics through targeted bus processing and detailed automation. Once the tonal balance and emotional energy of the mix are dialed in, I move to final mastering to optimize dynamic range and match industry-standard LUFS targets, ensuring your track delivers commercial punch, clarity, and seamless translation across every playback system.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Crafted around Studio One and Ableton Live, my setup bridges pristine technical precision with raw creative speed. My hybrid digital environment combines analog-modelled warmth from world-class plugins.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m deeply inspired by modern engineers for their unmatched clarity, balance, and modern pop translation across any system. Also the emotional, highly musical approach to mixing, vocal production precision, and ability to create massive impact with clean, intentional sonic choices.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Multitrack Mixing & radio-ready Mastering. Also I produce music on request.
