Interview with Onur Unal

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: A recent project featuring 11 hours of uninterrupted neuroacoustic content was very special to me. I took on the entire composition, frequency design, and mastering processes single-handedly. I successfully delivered the final mastered files, creating a flawless audio experience designed to support the listener's deep sleep stages throughout the entire night.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently developing a Flutter-based music education app called "Solfeggio" and continuing my piano/vocal repertoire rehearsals for an upcoming hotel residency program. Simultaneously, I am producing next-generation spatial audio projects for my international clients.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: At the moment, I personally handle the sound engineering, frequency design, and mixing for all of my projects.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: The digital realm (Studio One, Kontakt, etc.) provides me with unparalleled flexibility and flawless frequency control during the production process. However, when it comes to performance and sound design, the organic, analog feel and live performance capabilities of hardware synthesizers are indispensable. That's why I combine the greatest strengths of both.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Backed by the meticulousness that has earned me a high success rate on professional platforms, I promise to always deliver projects that are perfectly aligned with the targeted frequency precision, technically flawless, and delivered on time.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: My favorite part of my job is being able to create healing soundscapes that directly benefit people by blending my education in Art Design and Composition with modern sound engineering and AI tools.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: I most often get the question, "Do frequencies really change the listener's state of mind?" My answer is: Yes, when the right frequency range, proper listening environment (headphones), and intentional composition come together; the brain's synchronization to these rhythms (brainwave entrainment) is a scientifically proven result.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that my work consists simply of placing a random synthesizer pad behind nature sounds. In reality, it is a highly technical and scientific process aimed at guiding the mind using techniques like silent subliminals, spatial audio (8D), and psychoacoustic masking.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask about the exact duration of the project, the targeted brainwave state (Alpha, Theta, Delta, etc.), and if they have any specific tuning preferences like 136.1 Hz or 432 Hz. It's also important for me to know what kind of environment and devices the listener will typically use to experience these recordings.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: When ordering frequency or meditation music, I recommend clearly defining the specific mental state (focus, deep sleep, relaxation, etc.) you want the listener to achieve.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Studio One, Kontakt with Lunaris, Valhalla Reverb, a good pair of headphones, and a MIDI keyboard. Everything else can be built from these.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I studied music composition formally and began my career as a pianist and arranger. Over time I transitioned into digital production, specializing in meditation audio, spatial sound design, and brainwave entrainment. I've been producing professionally for over a decade, delivering projects ranging from single meditation tracks to 11-hour sleep series and 74-episode guided meditation programs.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Intentional and immersive. Every element in my productions serves a purpose — nothing is decorative. I build soundscapes that feel vast and organic while being precisely engineered underneath. The result is audio that works on the listener without them noticing the mechanics behind it.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Marconi Union — their album "Weightless" was scientifically proven to reduce anxiety by 65%. I'd love to collaborate on a project that pushes the boundaries of therapeutic sound design even further, combining their minimalist approach with my brainwave entrainment expertise.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: For binaural beats to work, the listener must use headphones — but more importantly, the carrier frequency matters as much as the beat frequency. A warm, low carrier (around 100-200Hz) feels more immersive and less fatiguing than a harsh high carrier. Always design your soundscape around the carrier, not on top of it.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Meditation music, binaural beats, ambient soundscapes, sleep music, and immersive spatial audio. Occasionally cinematic sound design and game audio for interactive experiences.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Brainwave entrainment production — specifically designing multi-phase binaural beat experiences that transition listeners through different states of consciousness. I combine precise frequency engineering with immersive ambient composition to create audio that works on both an artistic and neurological level.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a rare combination of classical music theory, psychoacoustic understanding, and modern production technique. I don't just make something that sounds good — I engineer audio with intention, ensuring every frequency, texture, and transition serves the listener's mental and emotional state.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start with a detailed brief to understand the target mental state, duration, and mood. I then select the appropriate binaural frequency (delta for sleep, theta for meditation, alpha for focus) and build the soundscape in layers — drone foundation, melodic elements, nature textures, and spatial effects. After the initial render I share a preview, incorporate feedback, then deliver mastered files in WAV 24-bit/48kHz.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work in a dedicated home studio built around Studio One as my primary DAW. My production chain includes Kontakt with Lunaris 1 & 2, Dronar Master Edition, Mosaic Pads, and Ambient Factory for sound design. For spatial processing I use Waves NX and Valhalla Reverb. Mastering is handled through iZotope Ozone 12, and frequency-specific work goes through FabFilter Pro-Q 3 and Pro-C 2.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Marconi Union for their scientific approach to relaxation through sound, Brian Eno for pioneering ambient music as an atmospheric and therapeutic art form, and Moby for bridging emotional depth with minimalist electronic production. Their work proves that music can operate on a neurological level — which is exactly what I aim for.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I produce binaural beat tracks, brainwave entrainment experiences, and immersive meditation soundscapes. Most of my clients are wellness app developers, meditation platform owners, and content creators who need multi-hour sleep music, alpha/theta/delta frequency tracks, or custom ambient soundscapes engineered to guide listeners into specific mental states.
