Endorse DeciiusInterview with Deciius
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently mixing the fantastic score to the TV Show "The Family Business" on Netflix and BET.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: In 2024, both. Because no one can get away from digital 100% these days and it's nice to have analog "warmth" in any digital recording.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The satisfaction of being creative and creating something new that never existed before.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: How much do you charge? A: If the rates are not available for what you're looking for, I will need to ask a few questions to get a better idea of the scope of your project. I don't want to overcharge you or undercharge you so that it's impossible to get the job done.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I look like a football linebacker not a traditional composer. My first love is cinematic music, not hip hop.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Who is your audience? What is the message you want to tell them? Do you have examples of what you think might work? When does this need to be delivered?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice would be to have a conversation with me via zoom! If anything, it would be a great chance to connect with another creative!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, LA Scoring Strings, Symphobia, AKG 414, UAD Apollo Twin
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path has always been composition and I've been doing this for 22 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a hybrid between Hans Zimmer, Brian Tyler , and Metro Boomin.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Steven Spielberg
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Gain-staging will change your life...and drink coffee, and remember to also stay hydrated.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Unrivaled versatility and dedication to the song until the project is finished. Years of experience and thousands of projects let's me "know" what the song needs.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a complete collection of virtual synthesizers and virtual orchestral libraries. I am fortunate to work with a college where I have access to a large recording facility, grand pianos and access to live musicians. I also use an API mixing console to mix some of my music if I'm not mixing "in the box."
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm definitely inspired by Hans Zimmer and his team, but also older composers like Gustav Holst, and Erich Korngold, and Bernard Hermann. Most of modern film scoring is based off of these guys and their music is just simply stellar!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do is creating custom music for them and arranging their already existing pieces of music into something more professional and aesthetically pleasing to a wider audience.
