Interview with Scott Desmarais
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I like the challenge of putting myself in another person's headspace and the connection you have with the client.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have your art as close to your vision as you can make it. Sending files to a mixer before you feel good about the record can spin things out of control fast.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook, Bryston 4B, pair of NS10s, Audeze headphones, and a Kensington trackball.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The only thing that matters is whats coming out of the speakers and how it makes you feel.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mainly work on pop, hip hop, rock.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is feeling. I understand right away what the artist is going for from my first listen to their reference mix. Anyone can learn the technical capabilities, but pulling the emotion up is an art.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Emotion, music wouldn't exist without it. There's a reason a guitar lick, a lyric, a chord progression was written. It made someone feel something. If I can take what the artist has made and pull the emotion forward, I've done my job.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to start by listening to your reference mix. I want to know what you've been listening to. What you've been playing for friends and most importantly what you've been singing along to in the car. From here, I try to get into your headspace and make sure my vision for the record is what the client is looking for.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm completely digital, or in the box. This allows the mix to come with me everywhere I go and allow revisions to be quick and efficient at no expense to the client.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Firstly, Manny Marroquin, my mentor for the past few years. Some of my favorite producers and engineers are Louis Bell, Ricky Reed, Ian Kirkpatrick, and Malay.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I'm mainly hired to mix records. Mixing can be as little as massaging everything into place, to a complete rebuild from the ground up.
