Interview with Daniel Alfaro

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of was my percussion musical direction at D23 Brazil, accompanying the voice actress of Moana during the official Moana 2 trailer launch. I created and directed the full percussion concept, bringing energy, emotion, and identity to a major live moment.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently performing in a musical theatre production, recording percussion for various projects, and producing an artistic opening for a large-scale event.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don’t have specific recommendations at the moment, but I’m always happy to help connect clients with the right professionals based on their project needs.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I’m not attached to one or the other. I use both. Analog for character, digital for precision. What matters most is choosing what best serves the music.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is to treat your music like my own creating percussion that elevates your track with care, creativity, and complete attention to what the song truly needs.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I love most is using percussion to tell a story adding groove, texture, and emotion that transform a track into something alive and meaningful.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Clients usually ask what instruments or how many layers they need. I always say: it’s not about quantity, it’s about what the song calls for. I build everything around that.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that more percussion means a better track when in fact, it’s about knowing what to add, what to leave out, and how to serve the music.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask about your vision, references, and how you want the percussion to feel in the track. From there, I align on details, expectations, and delivery to make sure everything serves the music perfectly.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Hire someone who serves the music, not their ego. The best results come from understanding the track, making intentional choices, and maintaining clear communication throughout the process.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Pandeiro, frame or skin drum, shakers, a condenser mic, and an audio interface simple tools to create endless grooves, textures, and musical ideas wherever I am.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: With over 10 years as a professional percussionist, my path has taken me from Brazilian rhythms and samba schools to orchestras and musical theatre, shaping a versatile and musical approach to recording and arranging percussion.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style blends authentic Brazilian groove with modern production, combining musicality, creativity, and a wide palette of textures to create percussion that feels alive and truly part of the song.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with Carlinhos Brown or Snarky Puppy — artists who push rhythmic boundaries and use percussion as a central voice in the music.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: "Don’t start by adding, start by listening". The best percussion choices come from understanding what the song actually needs.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I don’t limit myself to one genre — I adapt to what the music needs, working across styles like pop, world, cinematic, and more, always focusing on musicality and the song’s identity.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is knowing exactly what the song needs and creating percussion that supports, enhances, and elevates it with musicality and intention, often surprising clients with unique sounds and grooves they didn’t even know existed.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring groove, feel, and musical storytelling using percussion to add movement, texture, and emotion while always respecting what the song truly needs.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I begin with your track or ideas and create custom percussion arrangements using my full range of instruments. Whether following detailed instructions or building from scratch, I always serve the music adding as much or as little as the song truly needs.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work from a professionally treated studio using a PreSonus AudioBox interface, Sennheiser MD 421 and AKG P170 microphones for detailed and versatile percussion capture, all recorded and edited in Studio One for clean, mix-ready delivery.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by musicians like Hermeto Pascoal, Carlinhos Brown, and Gilberto Gi,, as well as artists like Snarky Puppy and Jacob Collier — all of whom bring a deep sense of rhythm, creativity, and musical identity to their work.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I record custom percussion tracks for artists, producers, and composers, creating arrangements from scratch that fit each song perfectly — from subtle textures to full rhythmic grooves, always delivered mix-ready.
