Interview with NoMBe
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: - my Nash Wayfarer - laptop - interface - AKG 4050 - cables??
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as a classical pianist from childhood and got into production as a teenager. Mostly sampling before I learned engineering and became an artist myself. I've been producing for 21 years now, across many DAW's, and have been doing it professionally for 12 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Warm, retro, combining genres and pulling from influences in a thoughtful way.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Bill Withers (RIP), if I could... he's the greatest to me. Alive, I'd say Anderson.Paak
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Being intentional with delays/reverbs. For example: using short delays instead of reverb on vocals can help prevent muddiness down the line. Similarly, using different reverb plugins for different sound sources, understanding when to use aux Sends and automation.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Genre-bending retro music. Progressive R&B or Indie. Gorillaz to Anderson.Paak. I love quirky music with catchy melodies and can't deny a classic song that gets carried by just the right musical backing. I'm at home with Tame Impala as much as Amy Winehouse.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Bringing a song to life with production that grabs you, even if it's minimal. My style is custom tailored and not interchangeable between artists. I'm also not afraid to break rules while maintaining pop sensibility if need be.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I tend to steer clean pop sessions into a bit more of a "cool", unique space, and tend to bring "weird" music into a poppier space. I like creating standout tracks for the artist and pride myself on detailed work. Tape emulation and warmth are my specialty, so is thinking outside of the box when it comes to arrangements.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical process involves getting to know the artist and their vision thoroughly. From there we do a lot of referencing and make a playlist with similar tracks. Unless there's a specific song that needs production, writing can start anywhere: a voice memo, an instrument or chords, a lyric, a beat, drums or recreating something the artist heard recently.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a cozy, spacious home studio filled with analog hardware and synths. I'm a plant dad, collect gear and am a bit of an old soul. My mic collection is small, but mighty with classic condensers & dynamic mics for any vocal. Dozens of guitars, upright piano, basses, the best hardware vocal chains in the game.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Damon Albarn (Gorillaz), Quincy Jones, Toro Y Moi, Pharrell Williams, Kenny Beats, Kid Harpoon
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: full track production, additional production (finishing), drum programming, sound design
