Interview with Halit ILDIZ
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of the projects I’m especially proud of is working on internationally distributed TV series such as Muhteşem Yüzyıl, İstanbullu Gelin and Bir Zamanlar Çukurova. My role focused on dialogue editing and post-production, ensuring that all dialogue was clean, clear and consistent across different scenes and recording conditions. When needed, I also supported the overall audio with subtle sound design elements to enhance the final result. What makes these projects special to me is the scale and the responsibility—working on productions that reached large international audiences required a high level of precision and consistency. It was a great experience to be part of projects where dialogue plays a key role in storytelling, and where even the smallest details matter.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment, I’m working on dialogue editing and audio cleanup for various film, TV and online content projects. My current work mainly involves improving dialogue clarity, reducing noise and preparing audio for broadcast and digital platforms. Depending on the project, I also support the final result with subtle sound design elements to enhance the overall listening experience.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I’m relatively new to SoundBetter, so I’m still getting familiar with the community. That said, I believe there are many talented professionals here, and I’m always open to collaborating or recommending the right person if a project requires skills outside my area of expertise.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital for precision and flexibility, especially in dialogue editing and audio restoration. Modern digital tools allow for extremely detailed control, which is essential when working with problematic recordings. That said, the goal is always a natural and organic sound, regardless of the tools used. When needed, I also support the result with subtle sound design to create a more immersive experience.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to deliver clean, natural and professional-sounding dialogue that serves your project. I focus on quality, clear communication and respecting your deadlines. Every project receives careful attention, and I always aim for results that sound natural rather than over-processed. When appropriate, I also use subtle sound design to enhance the final listening experience without distracting from the dialogue.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I enjoy most is transforming problematic recordings into clear and natural-sounding dialogue. There’s something very satisfying about taking audio that seems unusable and bringing it back to life while preserving the original performance. I also enjoy the subtle details—small adjustments and, when needed, light sound design touches that make the final result feel more immersive and complete.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: One of the most common questions I get is: “Can you fix this audio?” My answer is usually: “It depends on the condition of the recording, but in most cases I can significantly improve clarity and reduce noise.” Another common question is about pricing. I always explain that it depends on the complexity of the audio, and I prefer to review a short sample before giving an exact quote. Clients also often ask how natural the result will sound. My goal is always to keep the dialogue clean and clear without making it sound over-processed, and when appropriate, I may use subtle sound design to enhance the overall result.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions is that audio cleanup is a quick or automatic process. While modern tools are very powerful, achieving natural and high-quality results still requires careful listening, experience and manual work. Another common misconception is that all audio can be “perfectly fixed”—in reality, the quality of the original recording always plays a big role. The goal is not perfection, but to get the best possible result while preserving the natural sound. When needed, subtle sound design can also help improve the overall listening experience in a more organic way.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually start by asking about the condition of the audio and the overall goal of the project. I also ask for a short sample to better understand the level of cleanup or restoration required. It’s important for me to know the final delivery format, platform and any specific expectations regarding sound quality. If needed, I also discuss whether subtle sound design elements like ambience or background layers would help support the project.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice would be to focus on the quality of previous work and the ability to handle real-world audio problems, rather than just pricing or gear. Clear communication is also very important—sharing a sample of your audio and explaining your expectations will always lead to better results. Every recording is different, so working with someone who can adapt and choose the right approach is key. Subtle sound design can also make a big difference when used carefully to support the overall listening experience.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A powerful workstation, a reliable audio interface, accurate monitoring headphones, iZotope RX, and a clean recording microphone. With that setup, I could handle high-quality dialogue editing, restoration and even light sound design in a controlled and professional way.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my career in 2005 working in dubbing recording and direction. Over time, I specialized in dialogue editing and post-production, working on TV series, films and various broadcast projects. I worked in studio environments for many years before continuing as a freelancer, gaining experience across a wide range of productions. I have been working in this field for over 16 years. Throughout my career, I have focused on delivering clean, natural and professional dialogue, and when needed, supporting the audio with subtle sound design elements.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is clean, natural and transparent. I focus on making dialogue sound clear and balanced without drawing attention to the processing itself. The goal is always to preserve the original performance while enhancing it in a subtle and effective way. When needed, I support the result with light sound design elements to create a more immersive experience.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’m more interested in working on strong productions rather than with a specific artist. I enjoy projects where dialogue and storytelling are central, and where high-quality sound makes a real difference to the audience. That said, I would always be excited to collaborate on international productions that value detailed and immersive audio work.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One important tip is to avoid over-processing your audio. Clean and natural results usually come from subtle, well-balanced adjustments rather than heavy processing. Especially with dialogue, preserving the original tone and performance is more important than making it sound “perfect.” If needed, small sound design elements can help support the audio without overwhelming it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mostly work on dialogue-driven content such as TV series, films, documentaries, podcasts and online videos. My focus is not on a specific music genre, but on projects where clear, natural and well-balanced dialogue is essential. When needed, I also support the overall audio with subtle sound design elements to enhance the listening experience.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is dialogue editing and audio restoration. I specialize in turning noisy, unclear or damaged recordings into clean, natural and intelligible dialogue while preserving the original performance. When needed, I also support the result with subtle sound design elements to create a more immersive and cohesive listening experience.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring clarity, balance and natural sound to any project I work on. My focus is always on making dialogue clean, intelligible and emotionally consistent, without sounding over-processed. When needed, I also enhance the overall experience with subtle sound design elements such as ambience and background layers to support the scene. I approach every project with both technical precision and a strong sense of storytelling through sound.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process usually starts with reviewing the audio to understand its condition and the client’s needs. Then I proceed with dialogue editing, cleanup and restoration, focusing on clarity, natural sound and consistency. If needed, I also enhance the audio with subtle sound design elements such as ambience, background layers or SFX to support the overall scene. After that, I refine timing, balance and overall sound to make sure everything fits the project. Finally, I deliver the audio in the required format and remain available for revisions if needed.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in a professional studio environment built around Pro Tools and Nuendo, with a flexible hybrid workflow depending on the project. My setup includes industry-standard tools for dialogue editing and restoration such as iZotope RX, Cedar Audio, Waves, Accentize (dxRevive, dxSplit), Soundradix and other advanced plugins. I focus on achieving clean, natural and transparent dialogue, and I can easily adapt to different workflows and technical requirements.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by professionals in film and post-production audio who focus on clarity, realism and storytelling through sound. Rather than specific names, I’m more influenced by high-quality productions where dialogue feels natural and immersive without drawing attention to the process behind it. That level of transparency and precision is what I aim for in every project.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my work focuses on dialogue editing and audio cleanup for film, TV, podcasts and online content. Clients usually come to me with noisy, unclear or problematic recordings, and I turn them into clean, natural and professional-sounding dialogue. This often includes noise reduction, dialogue repair, timing adjustments and preparing audio for broadcast or online delivery.
