Harvey Herr on SoundBetter

The Noise Tamer. The shot is great but the audio sucks! You lost the audio from your boom operator. All you have left is some really bad sounding audio! There is way too much echo... the noise level is almost as loud as the dialogue... there is a terrible hum coming from somewhere!!!....Not all hope is lost! Before you trash your project call me

I was the head of audio production for Kenya's most prominent animation company in 2015 Tsunami Studios. I have been a music producer for a long time in Kenya a long time now producing the top young talent in the Rock scene: The Seeds of Datura & Powerslide. I compose my own music in the electronic/reggae genres using Maschine collaborating with my partners The Breadsteppas amongst other collaborators. In 2016 I managed a team for the production of a full length soundtrack for a Kenya/Bollywood production. Personally I handled the post-mixing/editing for the major component of work for me was complete audio restoration of the film audio from mono to 5:1 !

I am also available to consult for building acoustics & audio installations.

The lion is king. There only 3 mastering engineers whom I've worked with since 2000, that I would spare no expense to get their hand print on my work. Harvey is one of them. Maximum salute yo.

Interview with Harvey Herr

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I have been working with music and audio production since I was a teenager. I started recording and producing bands from the National Theater of Kenya in 2001 using rudimentary techniques and soon I was regularly recording demos for a variety of traditional troupes and rock bands and producing live shows for them in Nairobi up until 2005. In University I worked in multiple positions as a recording engineer for the symphony orchestra and as an audio technician for events. I worked as a presenter and promotions manager for the student radio station. I taught myself audio production throughout University and when I graduated I founded the first independent digital label in Kenya in 2008. In 2010 I pursued a masters degree in Geospatial Intelligence, requiring expertise in digital image processing. The techniques used to process imagery are very similar to digital audio and they helped advance my techniques considerably. In 2015 I founded the first cooperative studio in Kenya and began to undertake intensive work in music and audio production as a full-time pursuit. I also worked as a producer for the Tsunami Studio at this time focusing on music production and sound design. Productions of note since this time: “Chakua Hatua” by STL for Universal Records; “The Unprotected” audio restoration and soundtrack production for a Bollywood film in Kenya. I have been producing most of the rock bands in Kenya for the past 18 years. In 2018 I co-founded an imprint dedicated to this genre: “Obsydian Media,” to this end I manage a production team of 3 producers and we are currently working on a compilation, “Afrometal" to be released by 2019.
