Interview with Jayi
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: DELULU is my latest release as a solo artist. I produced, wrote, and mixed and mastered my song. It's my first song of my own with real instruments involved. I also creative directed the visuals. The song was 3 years in the making, and it means a lot to me since it was my own way of reaching out to my crush.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently finishing up my first EP. I have also been in contact with independent girl groups from overseas and a couple of local solo artists who are interested in my productions.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my music journey as a dancer. In 2017, I became sick from overexerting myself in my dance career and turned to music production instead. I was scouted for a global girl group in 2021, and was flown out to Los Angeles to work with professionals from the K-Pop industry. When that endeavor fell through, I began producing for artists in the San Francisco Bay Area. I debuted with my own solo music in 2024. I have been producing music for myself and other artists since!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with any girl group or boy band. I enjoy being a soloist now aside from being a producer, but there was a time when I auditioned to be in a group, and helped develop one that I used to be in. I would love to help a group find their sound, or create a new one for their next era.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I most commonly produce and mix Pop, Pop Rock, and Indie Pop/Easy Listening/Acoustic records.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is beatmaking. I make sure my productions are unique.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I believe in the importance of a hook. It could be a sound you've never heard before, or a catchy melody line or lyric. I try to give every song a signature that's bound to make it an earworm, or at least memorable.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I make sure to listen to my productions on anything that can produce sound: headphones, AirPods, my phone, my car speakers, etc. I listen to a production over and over again on all of these mediums until it's perfectly balanced.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: K/DA (Yes, the fictional group from League of Legends) changed me as a producer. The precision and sharpness of their music made me strive for that quality in my productions. Classic rock bands like Queen, Journey, and Boston inspire my rock records when I use real instruments.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly do producing/beatmaking for my artists.
