Interview with Federico Santoro
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's your final target?
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm composing for TV/Film and I'm developing artists!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I produce EDM tracks only.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Love what you do. Be passionate. I love to work with inspiring and passionate people.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I'm in the industry since 2011 with my own music career, plus I've worked in 5 professional studios as a part of a producers-team here in Italy. I ghostproduce, produce and compose for artists and brands since 2013 and I have A&R experience as well.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Back in the 2014 I released a track together with the legendary Tomorrowland resident-dj Yves V. He heard a track of mine some months ago and he played it in one of his radioshows. We started talking via skype and 1 hour ago we both decided to collaborate on a banger. He's been so humble since I was a newcomer, and we made a perfect festival-banger. Today is still one of our top 3 records !
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Matteo Romano. Incredible producer, composer and engineer!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I'd say both. Nowadays the digital plugins reached a crazy quality standard. Sometimes you need THAT hardware sound, and sometimes digital works way better for what you're doing.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Maximum focus on their musical vision / music target, clear communication and top quality records!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Making people proud and happy to work together!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Emotional and rough at the same time. My main goal is to bring a message through the music I make.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I typically love to work with creative and inspiring people that could teach you something even just being in the studio together! I really love Sia, David Guetta and Diplo!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: There's no better tool than your ears!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: House, Pop, EDM; Trap and sometimes Latin
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'm a empathetic guy, I really love to share feelings with music. So I always try to understand what the Artist or the Client wants to say through their music. Then I work on the project until my clients are 100% satisfied.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Vibes, perspective, emotions, quality.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My main target is to help the Artist or Client to achieve their musical vision. Then we'll be building the song from there.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Ableton Live 11, ADAM A77X, UAD Apollo Twin X Quad Heritage, a Neumann TLM 103, DT 770s and a NI Komplete S61.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm so inspired by Avicii, but also Kanye West, Giorgio Tuinfort, Clams Casino, Pharrell, Skrillex, Deadmau5, Max Martin, Lorde, Sia, Travis Scott, M83...list is endless!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: First step is always to communicate with the artist / client in a detailed way. I usually take care of the production from scratch. Sometimes the clients reach out with a rough idea of the kind of song they want, or with existing references. Sometimes they come at me with just a melody, and I build a track around what they have and what they want. I also really love to do other anywhere-in-between jobs like vocal tuning, editing or mixing.
