Interview with BHoops The Hermit
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: The second Witchcaller album, and a couple beat tapes.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Hybrid. Digital for accessibility but analog for the real flavour.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'll do it to the best of my abilities.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Expressive freedom. Satisfied customers. Making connections.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: When I say, "I'm just going to wing it." I am in fact, not winging it.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Who their influences are, what their vision is for their project, and how they want it to feel at the end.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: The first song is free. The worst thing that can happen is that you waste a bit of time on me if I can't deliver exactly what you're looking for.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: An 1176, An LA-2A, A line 6 Helix, an MPC, Model D.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: A professional bagpiper in the military with a brother who is a producer. Two studios in the house. Lots of gear, I kind of grew up around it.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: In Flames. Their 8-bit self cover album of I, The Mask was incredible. It blended two genres I have in heavy rotation.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: 1176. Just, yes.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: 8-Bit style music, Hip-hop beats, and metal.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Persistance!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Being stubborn in the sense that I'll try to make it as perfect as I can.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Work on a song until I hate myself. Then it's time to take a break for my ears and try again later.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Andy Sneap for the legendary albums he's produced. For artists, In flames, As I Lay Dying, Conducting From The Grave.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Whatever mixing or beat making they are looking for.
