I write both lyrics and melodies in Portuguese and English, and I love adapting ideas across languages and cultures to create something truly original.
Hi, I’m Carlos Cavallini, a Brazilian singer-songwriter and lyricist based in Lisbon.
My writing blends the poetic sensibility of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) with contemporary textures and universal stories. I’ve collaborated with award-winning producers like Luísa Sobral, Domenico Lancellotti, and Ricardo Dias Gomes, and my debut album O Tamanho do Tempo (2024) has been featured in major Portuguese and Brazilian media. I’m passionate about crafting songs that feel authentic, emotional, and timeless — whether it’s for your own project, film, or co-writing session. I write both lyrics and melodies in Portuguese and English, and I love adapting ideas across languages and cultures to create something truly original.

Interview with Carlos Cavallini
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m especially proud of my song “Um Milhão,” produced by Luísa Sobral. It was written during her songwriting retreat, where each participant had to compose a song inspired by a short story by António Lobo Antunes. The story described a man waiting for a woman who never showed up at a restaurant on a rainy day. But there was a twist — each songwriter had to tell the story from a different perspective, and I drew the point of view of someone watching the man through a window. The challenge was to translate that quiet observation and empathy into music. Luísa really loved the result and invited me to record it with her production — which made it even more special.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently focused on my artistic career — performing live shows in Portugal and Brazil, composing new songs for my next album, and developing collaborations with musicians and producers I admire. It’s a very creative moment, full of writing, performing, and shaping the next chapter of my musical journey.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with talented producers and musicians from Portugal and Brazil - and I’m always happy to recommend trusted collaborators when a project calls for it.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I love the warmth of analog and the flexibility of digital - so I mix both worlds. A good song lives beyond the gear.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To deliver songs with honesty, care, and professionalism - and to treat every project as if it were my own.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Turning someone’s story or emotion into a song they can be proud of. There’s something magical about giving words and melody to a feeling that didn’t have shape before.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They often ask, “Can you write in both Portuguese and English?” And my answer is always: Yes - and I love moving between languages and finding how each one shapes emotion differently.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That songwriting is instant inspiration. In truth, it’s a mix of intuition and craft - feeling and editing - until the song feels effortless.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask: What story do you want to tell? What emotions do you want the listener to feel? Do you have any reference tracks or artists that capture your vibe?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who listens deeply and writes from the heart. A great song comes from trust and communication - not just technique.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Taylor guitar, a Shure MV88+ mic, a MacBook, Logic Pro, and a pair of good headphones. That’s enough to make magic anywhere.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been writing songs since I was a kid in Brazil. After moving to Lisbon in 2007, I studied Ethnomusicology at Universidade Nova de Lisboa and kept writing while doing academic research on Brazilian music. My debut album O Tamanho do Tempo came out in 2024, and I’ve been working professionally as a songwriter ever since.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Poetic, melodic, and emotional - rooted in MPB and folk traditions, but open to modern textures and cross-cultural influences.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to collaborate with Sondre Lerche or Jorge Drexler — both have an incredible sense of melody and intimacy. Their music feels timeless and sincere, which is what I always aim for in my own writing.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t overproduce too early. Let the song breathe before you build layers around it. If a melody and lyric work with just voice and guitar, everything else will fall naturally into place.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mostly work on Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), folk, and singer-songwriter styles, but I also collaborate across pop, indie, and world music projects where strong storytelling and emotional resonance are key.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Songwriting and lyric writing - particularly the ability to express complex emotions with simplicity and musicality, in both Portuguese and English.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring heart, lyricism, and clarity of emotion. My background in ethnomusicology also helps me shape songs with cultural depth and poetic nuance. I like to think I bring a music that feels honest but carefully crafted.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by listening carefully - to your story, your references, and your intention. Then I sketch melodies and lyrics, often with the guitar or piano, until something feels true to the emotion of the project. I’ll send a demo, we refine together through revisions, and make sure the song fully reflects your vision.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from a cozy home studio in Lisbon. It’s equipped with high-quality microphones, an audio interface, studio monitors, and a quiet acoustic space for writing and recording vocals and guitars. I use Logic Pro and GarageBand, depending on the project’s needs, and collaborate remotely with musicians and producers worldwide.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by artists and producers who combine emotional depth with sonic sophistication - people like Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Luísa Sobral, Jorge Drexler, Sondre Lerche, Keane. They all have that rare ability to make music feel both intimate and universal.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly write and compose original songs - both lyrics and melodies - for artists who want something authentic, emotional, and timeless. I also collaborate as a co-writer, helping artists shape ideas, refine lyrics, and find the right tone or story for their music.
