Endorse Taras KuznetsovI’m so happy I worked with Taras on my original song “Looking for Love”. He did all the production – arrangement, mixing, mastering, and also recorded piano and drums. It turned out even better than I expected! Everything he does sounds super professional, and his ideas are so creative! He even added drum’n’bass part to the song, which I didn’t expect at all, and it was so cool. I really wanna work with Taras again for sure!
Taras wrote the original music for the third season of our podcast series "Fun Police". He meticulously adapted the tracks to the vibe and cadence we were going for, and worked it out in record time. It gave our show more feel, rhythm, and the eery mood we wanted.
They say that 50% of a good story podcast is the music. That's true, but only if the right person wrote the music. Make that guy be Taras for your podcast !Taras has been completely transformative to my music. His mastery of every genre we've done (jazz, rock, metal, reggae, prog pop) goes far beyond musical proficiency. He can play or sing anything you, but his greatest strength is his incredible vision for both the song AND the artist. No one on this planet has given me better feedback and advice than Taras, and I am truly grateful every time he works with me. In addition to keys, vocals, drums, mixing, and mastering, he has also arranged horns for me, and even the snootiest jazz cats I know loved his work (even though it was in F# :P).
Interview with Taras Kuznetsov
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Very proud of my Fun Police Season 3 music I made. My album "Truth not to be told". I completely produced it by my own and it is a big milestone for me to be able to do that. Also it fits the podcast perfectly!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment trying to produce a pop album for pitching for Sync!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Probably... But there are so many people...
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Doesn't matter, it's just a tool
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Clear communication and giving my best to their music
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Love making music and love when the song brings success and happiness to the artist!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: It is that I keep to myself and only want to do the things my way. When in reality I just want to do what is best for the music. Again, all comes down to good communication and absence of prejudice.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Depends on the project!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be clear and professional in your communication - everything else can be negotiated!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Rope, knife, honestly I'm not planning to move to a desert island
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: 30 years playing piano, 15 years singing, ±15 years producing and around 8 years playing drums. I was just a pianist initially, but on each rehearsal I would tell everyone what to do basically arranging the music on the fly. So I figured that this is what I need to do.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My overall style is quite straightforward. I like clean workflow. I like when people are conscious and follow the plan that we agreed upon. I always try to be thorough and concrete in my communication and I like when people are like that too.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I guess artists like Leanne La Havas, Gregory Porter or Teddy Swims. I love their music and I think I could contribute with my vision!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Listen to what the music tells you and follow it, Usually the core elements (chords melody and lyrics) have all the answers to the arrangement!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly Soul, Modern Soul, RnB, Pop, Funk, Indie and Jazz, Motown... But I honestly hate genre cliches. I love all music, and I think any kind of music has a right to live, I'm here to transform it to its best form!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I believe it's Versatility. I always search for a best angle to approach a song, because all songs are different. And I have quite a few skills in my possession to fit the song's needs! There are no restrictions or blocks in my ways of producing, so if a song needs a jazz piano solo or just a simple synth violin that holds one note for the chorus - let it be so !
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring authenticity, that's for sure, but also organic playing, lot of melodic content and harmonic alterations (if the music needs it), but I kinda record by the "Thy shall not harm the music" commandment :-D
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Typically I listen to whatever you have (be it a scratch vocal recording, a 2-chords guitar and vocal piece or even if you have a song that just needs keyboard fillings) and then we define our workflow. But from there I ask you to trust me to fulfil the vision that I have, like making an arrangement that I see fit for your music, and then having feedback from you we combine our visions in pursuit of making the best out of your music!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a humble home studio with Focal Alpha monitors and Persons interfaces, but I have a really vast collection of plugins and emulators as well as a plethora of VST instruments of great quality.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am always inspired by new artists who made it by hard work and dedication, because I'm like that too. But if you want names - Sting and probably Warren Huart are one of my favourites music professionals.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly do full song production - starting from scratch to the final radio ready result!
