Interview with Technical Piano Specialist
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on a full album of slow delicate and neoclassical felt piano tracks.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Mixing piano music is very creative and that is something that I feel I excel at and enjoy. Providing the finished mastered version and getting good client feedback is something that drives me!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: There is no exact process to follow for solo piano music. The instrument has 88 keys and some tracks have lots of low end but others may not. Also engineering a wide stereo master is not always the solution, sometimes a mono sound can be the answer.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the story behind the track, and what is your vision?
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: A careful combination of Analog Outboard and In The Box Digital.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Neoclassical Artists - Olafur Arnalds (neutrality), Max Richter (melodic), Philip Glass (repetitive, harmonic)
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I would say mastering solo piano is the most common work we do. I generally receive the original microphone recordings (left and right stems) The first listen is the most important and the task is then to understand the vision and the message of the story and music.
