Interview with Alex Beitzke
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Most of my credits are in the pop world but my musical background is way more obscure... happy to work on country, experimental rock or even Jazz if it's good. ;)
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Deliver a tidy project and know what you're expecting to get out of it.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started playing instruments at the age of 5, played guitar in rock bands, started working in recording studios at the age of 17, moved to London and became head engineer of Hook End Studio and Dean St Studio. Loads of production, mixing and writing since then. Great team of managers and publishers around me and some wonderful music collaborators.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: People focused
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Feel free to ask
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Folk, indie pop, singer/songwriter, electronic music
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Powerful vocals and creative mixing approaches but most of all listening to the artist.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Depth, excitement and emotional impact is usually what I aim for when mixing. I will usually build everything around the vocal performance and lyrical world and try to enhance the song's journey.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depends a lot on the artist and project. A good chat helps.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Currently working out of my home studio in North London as well as my room at Dean Street Studios (Studio2) in Soho, London.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Hard to get tired of Kevin Parker's sonics. Also enjoying most of the stuff that Shawn Everett's had his hands on lately - Kacey Musgrave, Alabama Shakes, War On Drugs etc Also really enjoying the calmer sounds of Phoebe Bridgers, Kid Harpoon's work with Harry Styles and Jack Antonoff's work every now and then.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do a lot of production and mix work, focusing usually on organic or hybrid type of sonics and with focus on vocal production. Having trained as an engineer in "old school" recording environments, I feel like I bring most value when working on complex analogue sound sources (think live drums, live recordings) and giving them edge and focus. I am also happy to help with vocal production (editing, tuning & processing) especially with focus on electronic music. Currently relevant collabs include: Camelphat, Vintage Culture, Kream and others
