Interview with Monét, aka Waadaadah Gurl

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: My style, from what others have said and from what I notice myself, is very multifaceted as I have a pretty ancient soul. From R&B/Soul, to Reggae to soft AfroPop, My sound has often been compared to Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys and a lot of times more modern day singers like from Jhene Aiko to Kehlani to Cleo Sol to the Internet and (((o))). I'm an earthy kind of woman who loves singing about peace, unity, mindfulness and spiritual evolution and anyone who knows me well knows I'm all about homeopathic medicine, so performing around plants and crystals or being adorned in plants and crystals is not very unusual of me.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: A project I worked on over these past few years is cultivating a family while developing new music that helped me to express the beauty of all creation and why I've felt immense gratitude to have been given musical gifts in the first place. Its healing on every level, and what im proud of most is how my voice has had the ability to carry me through miraculous events every time i felt something was trying to drag me down. It shows me that the power of benevolent forces will always be stronger, and that the eyes cannot deceive you if love is in your heart, because its the closest thing we have to magic and if anyone has a reason to believe in it, I truly believe itd be me. The role i play in all that is a multidimensional one where i play the daughter of Jah, the mother of Jah, the sister, the friend, the lover, the bride. I'm blessed to have many places and people to call home and I pray to continue to water this garden until I'm surrounded by the fruits of my Labor. I'm honored to walk this path and couldnt ask for anything better if i tried. Alhum.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: My Self. My Mindset. Not just as a musician but as a Mother. A Lover. A friend. All of these passions in my heart, that is what pours into the music.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: I actually found SoundBetter through a Musician Vlogger on Youtube and when I find her name, I will share it as she was incredible at offering the insights she did about SoundBetter.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Both, because my inner world was meant to project outworld and change the world. But the greatest recorder of all time is the Most High, so theres plenty of analog that never makes it to digital, and i think thats for a very sacred purpose. Inshallah, I say, both are necessary for the purpose they serve at the time they are supposed to be ignited. Alhumdulli.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: That I will always stay true to the message of my song, and authentic to my true character. That I will show up as not just some of myself, but all of my self and do my best to shine my light so that others can shamelessly do the same.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: That I can share my message with the world & vibrate on the frequency of other beings who resonate with the things I have to say. Not only is it liberating, but it's vital and rejuvenating for my mind, body and spirit, just like food.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: How long have I been singing and why did I walk away from some publising contracts or opportunities to work with famous celebrities. The simple answer is, I've been singing since I was a little girl and because I was told from a young age, by Family and strangers alike, that someday I would be famous or my voice would take me far, I guess by nature I decided that however that happened would need to be by the divine guidance of the higher power that has my best, most high interests at heart. So as thankful and flattered as I was by all of the offers for infinite protection in the best VIP sections and party invitation to rooftops where Jay Z & Beyonce mingle, those offerings came to me when I was still young, just starting out in music and i was vulnerable to many offers at that time, which as a young but mature woman I knew I needed to treat seriously and not make any rash irreversible decisions because i simply had the choice to. I wanted to delegate the situation wisely, and sustain the deep conviction I had about needing to reach my success as an independent artist genuinely, authentically, entrepreneurially and with the least resistance possible so my future and reputation could be backed not by money and potentially fragile promises that could pose any risks but by the spiritual power I was clear had walked me through the doors of those places in the first place. I'd say it like this: I'm not in the business of mooching and believe hard work, dedication and a graceful patience and mindfulness will get me where I need to be, at the right time, and with the right beings. And is this mindset that rises above tempation to preserve the heart quality of my art that I will always be grateful for.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: That because I'm spiritually connected and advanced in those levels of working, that I never make time to kick back and celebrate. I'm actually the goofiest, most adventurous, kind hearted and childlike person you'll every meet, despite me being about my business and being thorough about the energetic spirits I keep.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: The only two I really have are 1) What is your reason for doing music and creating art? & 2) Are you looking to build long term relationships and a nation around your music or more short term, temporary projects?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Although I have a very multidimensional, be sure to learn about my services and areas of expertise before inquiring. It would be best to work with me if you enjoy my work, can resonate with the genres I'm familiar with, and the services i offer. Im super flexible and easy to get a long with if you generally have fun with your creative process like I do, and keeping it profressional and attentive to the details of your request is one of my strongsuits. I'm generally thorough about ensuring satisfaction levels as I've worked in this industry for a while now. I'd say, simply put, just come knowing what you want and lets take it from there!

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: If this sounds bougie oh well, but I would definitely take 1) working boat with a sail, 2) a notebook and a pen for all my creative thoughts and captain logging, 3) at least one solar panel to charge my hot spot device, 4) a flare gun 5) and a lifetime supply of a variety of fruit and vegetable seeds.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I wrote my first song, River, in October of 2018, and haven't stopped writing since. I may have over 100 songs by now, but I don't keep count as much as I just enjoy the process of being in the song.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: This depends on the general energy of the artist themelves. Everyone has a unique mindset, way of lifestyle, and connection to their music. Whether oldschool or new school, I would generally like to work with artists who are family oriented and put their heart into their music for the upliftment of humanity. Ones wise enough to never sell their soul for a paycheck and have some sort of intelligence when it comes to their royalties, and how to move about the industry with their own unique style and prioritization of peace, prosperity and collective enjoyment.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: For me, its all about mindset. The creator is just as important as the creation. So I would say to always respect the flow of your own breath. Take your time, release the need for perfection, and embrace every part of your voice or production from the clearest notes to the scratchy ones, or the smoothest mastering to the rockier ones. No one day, or musical journey is the same, but if you love yourself through every part of it, it will always be your song and you will always be the one who can perform it best.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: At the heart of my soul is R&B/Soul music as well as Reggae & Afrobeat music.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: As a musician, I'd say my strongest skill is either hitting any note im tasked to or hearing every little part of a beat, even the tiniest sounds that many overlook, and seeing how that helps my voice reflect back to it. I'm a Soprano and alto singer developing skill in the bass of my voice and I can perform any riff you task me too whether its from an old school Alicia Keys or Whitney Houston song or a Kehlani, Rihanna or Jhene Aiko song.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: A mood, a vibration that meshes with the energy of the beat. I bring vocals that can either be strong and savage or soft and sweet. I both rap, sing, and write all my music. I'd say the best thing I bring to a song is good vibes, enthusiasm & an all-in kind of energy.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: The atmosphere and my inner-journey at the time all contribute to my creative process. But typically, my mind makes music, beats and lyrics 24/7. If the words come first, the beat comes soon after. In the same way, if i hear a nice beat, words automatically seem to pour through.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have an in-home studio with professional equipment (mics, interface, logic software, etc) and had occasionally recorded at other professional studios in the city.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Laury Hill, Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, India Arie, Anita Baker, Alicia Keys, Jhene Aiko, Kehlani, Lila Ike, etc.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: 1) Background Vocals (Soprano, Alto & Bass, Controlled Riffs & Sustained Pitches) 2) Writing Hooks & Choruses 3) Demo Vocals 4) Writing Full Songs 5) Finishing Song Lyrics 6) Collaborating on Lyrics & Melodies
