Interview with Mixtheus
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Each work I do as an engineer for Levi Keniata (producer and artist) is an awesome experience and I have no words to express how proud and honored I am to be a part of it!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Why not the best out of both worlds?
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I can promise one thing: They'll have the best out of me always!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The everyday challenge. The mixes that I have to find a unique way to achieve something that is on my mind or the artist / producer minds are the best ones.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I think that the biggest misconception is that mixing and mastering will work miracles. These processes are of course a key for a good sounding song or album, but they depend directly of the material that is been given to the mix/master engineer. So a good song, good arrangement, good performance and a good production and recording are the key to a great mixing and mastering. With low quality recordings I will be limited to what I can do, but we can still achieve a lot in the process of mixing and mastering. I will make it sound as good as possible ALWAYS. If you're in doubt about the quality of your record, please feel free to contact me!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What does he expect about the mixing or mastering process and what I can do to help him to achieve this goal.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Try to find somebody who is not only here to give you a good sound quality, but someone who understand what are your needs and helps you to get there.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My ears, my monitors, my fader controller, Pro Tools and Lo-Fi ('cause why not? haha)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I'm a musician for over 15 years now and I started to get involved into music production about 10 years ago, but I'm 100% dedicated to it in the past 8 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Definitely I like to work in a way that the mix is like a character in the song. I’m not afraid of trying different things and I usually try to make the best balance between my taste and what the song needs.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: There are definitely a lot haha I want to state that I like challenges I love working with artists that are trying to bring something new.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always do the best you can in the moment, regardless of what you have available!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I believe that my strongest skill is to make mix decisions (or mastering for that matter) that will enhance what the song is trying to translate.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Movement and emotion! That's what this is all about. I like to enhance what the artist and the producer are proposing with the project and bring a little bit of me as well, as long as this helps the artist to express what he wants.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When I'm mixing, I try to do all the editing and session preparation beforehand, so I can focus on what is more important during the mixing process. I like to discuss with the producer and/or artist about what they expect from the mixing process, aesthetic-wise and ideas of things that I can do that could improve even more their production. My goal here is to present the song so it aligns with their artistic vision while maintaining a polished and commercially viable master... I will carefully listen to the music and do whatever I think it's necessary to make it sound as good as it can! And the more important: Make the song translate the emotion that is intended to. I'm sure you will really like the result! When I’m mastering, first of all I try to understand the language, colors and intentions of the album or song that is going to be mastered. I like to discuss with the producer as well about what they expect about the mastering process and to have a good relationship with the mix engineer, respect his work and make an effort to make the best translation of his work.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: As an engineer, Bruce Swedien is my main inspiration. You can definitely see his passion when he is talking about audio, and some of the things he said sitcks with me and I apply constantly in my daily job. But there are so many engineers and artists that inspire me!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Remote mixing services and mixing of songs I've recorded.
