Celtic/Irish traditional tin whistle and flute player, with experience of adding celtic-themed tin whistle, low whistle and flute to other people's tracks. Credits include songs by Christine Weir (South Africa) and Simon Cousins (UK). Home recording equipment means I can work remotely. I'm an All-Ireland medalist and play to a high standard.
I can add celtic-themed tin whistle, low whistle and flute to your recordings. As well as playing Irish traditional/folk music, I have lots of experience playing on original compositions, and my sound would fit well with ambient music. I can record at home and send my flute or whistle parts to you for mixing, so location is no object. I have worked on several tracks for Christine Weir, a singer songwriter from South Africa, during which all my parts were recorded remotely at home in the UK.
I have been playing traditional Irish music on flute, tin whistle and low whistle for over forty years. I am a professional musician, and teach trad Irish flute and whistle online to people all over the world.

Endorse Bev WhelanWithout a doubt the finest flautist, whistle player, and arranger I have ever had the good fortune to work with. Bev Whelan is a champion and master of the Irish folk tradition; learning her craft from the likes of Harry McGowan, Paddy Moloney, and Roger Sherlock. But don’t take my word for it - let her performances speak for themselves - YouTube search “Woman of Ireland by Simon Cousins” https://youtu.be/HtX1oUPHIcU?si=ohpIklImdjjxdG8R
I've recorded with Bev previously. She is very professional and an amazing musician, playing just what's needed for the track with no pretence. Would thoroughly recommend!
Interview with Bev Whelan
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually run whatever guide track you send me through Reaper software, and line up my parts with that so that the timestamps match. I like to to listen to a rough idea of what you want me to play to help me learn my parts, as I am most comfortable learning music by ear, but I can also work from written music. I am also able to improvise and work out my own parts if that is what you would like me to do.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly add celtic-themed whistle, low whistle and flute to other peoples recordings, providing a hint of celtic ambience to all kinds of music. I can play Irish traditional jigs, reels and airs to a high standard, and have a lot of experience playing on folk songs, so I am also able to work on more mainstream traditional/folk music tracks.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am proud of all the work I do, but my proudest achievement would be playing on Christine Weir's tracks due to the amazing quality of the music and the incredibly professional recording process. It is especially lovely to know that my playing on those recordings has been heard on radio channels all over the world.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I come from a very musical family, and have been playing Irish traditional music for over 40 years. I have played in many bands, and toured overseas for a number of years with an Irish dance show. I lived in Ireland for several years, and I love to go back to my roots and play in traditional Irish music sessions whenever I can, but I'm also happy playing around with different genres of music. I've tinkered wth a bit of blues and contemporary flute music and, as well as currently playing in an Irish band, I also play Klezmer and Balkan tunes with another group that I work with.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record at home, using a Behringer condenser microphone and audio interface run through Reaper software on my computer. I save my parts as .wav and use a filesharing site to transfer them over for you to mix.
