Endorse cZekielAs a producer & Engineer, I can always count on cZekiel to help me wrap up projects & records, no matter the genre! He has such a strong knowledge of music overall that he’s able to embody whatever vibe we are working on in the moment and such a skilled musician on top of that. He should be YOUR go to like he’s mine!
Interview with cZekiel
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm especially proud of my contributions to my friend Thomas Sanders's original musical "Ultimate Storytime". It was my first professional studio work, playing guitar for an original cast recording, and working with a Grammy-nominated producer (Andrew Wade, most known for his work with A Day To Remember)
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm writing original music for my theatre company Third Side Theatre Co.'s production of "The Princess and The Goblins", I'm about to play bass for a month for a professional run of Escape To Margaritaville, I am helping to record demos for an original musical, looking at possibly partnering with a studio to provide gear for their live room & have access to the space to be able to record drums around the clock without bothering neighbors, and working on my 2nd original album.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both have their place.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will not cut any corners.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I get something out of it. I am a giver & love to support the art however I can, I am not here to serve my own ego.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is this for? When do you need it by? What would you like on it? Are you open to other ideas in addition to what you asked me to do? What are you looking to pay for this work?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be specific about what you are looking for, and be open to how I interpret your criteria. I am full of surprises - so the more open-minded you can be, the better!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Computer, SM57, Guitar, Bass, Calabash (coolest percussion instrument out there)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I cut my teeth playing in pit orchestras for musical theatre productions. I had access to a $250,000 studio when I was 16 and learned a lot during its lifetime that I have been able to apply to my projects as well as those of my friends & clients. Raised just outside of the blue bubble that is Gainesville, Florida, I have had a very diverse spread of music that has shaped me. Pair that with the need to know everything from Jazz to Classical to Gospel & Rock for any given musical theatre gig, I have learned to be comfortable with any style of music thrown to me.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Polished but real. Not afraid to get ugly either, but only doing what is necessary for the art.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kendrick Lamar. He is always willing to take a risk and try something new.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Performance is key. Longer takes = more humanity. Do as little processing as possible on the back end.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Folk/Singer-Songwriter, Metal, Pop, North African/Saharan Desert Blues, Hip-Hop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Leaving my ego at the door & serving the art.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Soul, intention, focus, sincerity, breath, layers, theory
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It depends on the project, it is always different & once I get started it's hard for me to stop until I have a finished product.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I live with professional artists in a DIY music studio. Our living room also functions as a full main room with drums always set up & ready to record, multiple interfaces and tons of inputs and almost every instrument you can think of. I have a separate recording studio in my room where I do the bulk of my work where I lean heavily on my Volt 476 interface with tons of plugins from companies like Strymon, Universal Audio, Neural DSP, Ampeg, Waves, and more.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Anyone leaning into aspects of fusion. I love music that blends elements of different genres, but I have had my day in the sun with everything you can think of & can confidently contribute to any musical environment I find myself in.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Recording original music & contributing multiple instruments & stacks to the songs.
