Interview with Steven Manovski
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Working on TXT's "Quarter Life" was a great experience because K-Pop requires a unique combination of songwriting, production detail, vocal focus and modern sound design. It challenged me to create something fresh while fitting within a very high-level global pop landscape.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. There is nothing like capturing an incredible performance through the right microphone and analogue chain, but modern digital tools allow us to transform sounds and create ideas that were impossible before. The best productions use whatever serves the song.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Every project receives the same level of care, creativity and attention to detail, regardless of the artist's experience or audience size. My goal is always to help create the strongest version of the song.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Taking an idea from a rough concept into a finished record that connects with listeners around the world. Seeing a song evolve is the most rewarding part of what I do.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People often think making great pop music is simple, but creating something fresh and memorable within commercial boundaries requires deep knowledge of songwriting, arrangement, sound selection and production.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Come with your vision and references, but stay open to collaboration. The best records happen when the artist and producer trust each other and combine their ideas to create something better than either could make alone.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, guitar, piano, Telefunken 251 microphone, Audeze headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've spent over 20 years working professionally in music. I started as a professional drummer, then built and operated a successful recording studio in Sydney, Australia before moving to London and expanding my career as a producer, songwriter and engineer working with artists around the world.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clean, modern and polished, with a strong focus on emotion, melody and commercial impact. I like productions that feel detailed but still connect instantly with the listener.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always protect the focal point of the song. Every instrument should support the emotion and the main idea — not compete with it. Great production is often about knowing what not to add.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, K-Pop, Dance, EDM, Pop-Rock and crossover records. I enjoy working on music that creates an emotional connection while still having a strong commercial identity.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My biggest strength is combining a broad range of musical influences with strong songwriting instincts. I love bringing unexpected elements together while keeping the final production focused and commercial.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Experience knowing what a song actually needs. Sometimes that means adding layers, textures and production detail; other times it's finding the one perfect element that makes the entire record come alive.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by finding the strongest emotion, hook or idea in the song and build the production around that. From arrangement and sound selection through vocal production, mixing and final polish, I focus on making every element serve the song.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio features ATC SCM25A monitors, Audeze LCD-4 headphones, vintage Neumann U67 microphone, Manley Gold preamp, Neve preamps and a hybrid setup designed for high-end recording, production and mixing.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Turning ideas into finished records — from full song production and arrangement to adding the final production touches that elevate a track. I specialise in taking demos, vocal ideas and concepts and transforming them into polished, release-ready productions.
