Interview with Sky Beats

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: A track I produced back in 2015 that took me about 12 mins to produce and 15 mins to vocal just landed on a Netflix series. I owned 50% of both the composition and publishing. Its not the first or last time but seeing long-term work pay off again and again years later is a reminder that music always finds its place.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Client singles, sync-ready beats, a few mix projects for artists dropping this summer, and developing my own sample pack and plugin line to give back to the community I'm about to launch

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don’t co-sign lightly, but if you need live strings, Afro percussion, or specialist vocalists, I’ve got a trusted network I can connect you to.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. I love analog character (Neve, Avalon, Distressor), but I lean on digital for speed, precision, and flexibility. The magic’s in how you use both.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I’ll treat your music with the same care and respect I give my own. You’ll get honest communication, a high-quality product, and no shortcuts—ever. If I'm not enthusiastic about it, I promise I'll not take your money Im private, so I won't be sharing or showing without any permission,

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Taking something raw and transforming it into a record that means something. Seeing clients hear their track finished for the first time—that moment never gets old. its like watching a makeover reveal show

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: its probably “Can you make my vocals sound industry?” Yes—if your take has vibe and clarity, I’ll handle the rest: comping, tuning, mix balance, and FX that give your vocal weight and presence.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That mixing is just balancing levels or that production is just adding drums. Real work involves emotion, dynamics, and decisions that shape the entire feel of a track.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask about your vision, influences, intended audience, release plans, and whether you’re building for sync, streaming, or stage. The more context I have, the better I can serve the track.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be clear about what you want, but be open to hearing ideas that may elevate your sound or advice on what might hinder your goals. I don't aim just to deliver— I aim to enhance your understanding and enjoyment.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Neumann U87, Avalon 737, MacBook Pro with Logic Pro X and plugins, Focal SM9s, and an internet connection. (Because what’s the point if I can’t send the work off!)

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been producing, engineering, and mentoring for over 20 years. From pirate radio to placements on Netflix and BBC, my journey’s been built on consistent quality and helping others find their sound. I own a commercial studio and mentor artists/producers into the world of sync, but I can't seem to fall out of love with the daily grind.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Urban, soulful, and polished. Everything I do is rooted in emotion but shaped for today’s platforms—clean, loud, and streamable without sacrificing character. That being said, I am also told my stuff sounds like it should be in a movie.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Tems. She brings vibe, vulnerability, and clarity in a way that’s timeless. I’d love to help shape her sound into something even more expansive and cinematic.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Your vocal isn’t finished when it’s in time and in tune—it’s finished when it feels right in context. Always check your mix emotionally, not just technically.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Initially it was mainly UK rap, R&B, dancehall, afro, alt-soul, and anything with depth and groove. That said, I’ve worked on a lot of pop & dance, gospel, acoustic, and commercial sync projects too. If it needs to sound clean, heavy, or emotional, I’m your guy.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Vocal production. I’m surgical with comping, tuning, and layering—but never kill the feeling. I’m also strong at enhancing unfinished tracks and getting the mix to hit commercially without losing soul. Ido have a serious skill for creating big vocals.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Emotion, clarity, and weight. I know how to make vocals sit just right, and I bring years of arrangement and sonic judgement to every track—whether it needs subtle polish or full transformation. But also I bring energy, if I'm not feeling it ill let you know that the project isn't for me because I need to be enthusiastic about delivering your expect results.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: First, I get clear on your vision—style, mood, goals. Then I start building or refining, checking in throughout. You'll hear every stage and get revisions to shape it how you want it. My goal is simple: make it sound unique and fit for purpose.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work out of a professional, acoustically treated space featuring a Neumann U87, Avalon 737, AMS Neve 1081, Focal SM9 monitors, Mac Pro 12-core, and UAD with Waves, SoundToys, Auto-Tune, and more. It’s vocal-first, mix-ready, and sync-optimised.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by innovators like Quincy Jones, Labrinth, Timbaland, Noah "40" Shebib, Rick Rubin, Mike Dean, and Tems. Also producers and bands like Nigel Godrich, Mark Ronson, Bon Iver, and Radiohead — anyone who pushes sonics forward while keeping soul, story, or culture at the core.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I help clients take an idea—whether it’s a voice note, acapella, or demo—and turn it into a polished, release-ready record. That includes vocal production, beat creation, mixing, and mastering.

  • New Sync in Netflix show "Forever"May 31, 2025

A track I produced in 2015 just got placed in episode 2 of Forever on Netflix. It’s a reminder that well-crafted music never expires. Clean production, proper metadata, and owning your rights can open doors years later. If you're ready to get your music sync-ready and into TV, film or ads, let’s build something that lasts.
