Interview with Jack M Hillier

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: This is hard.... but it would have to be my Flamenco guitar, upright piano (anythings possible), a drum of some sort, vinyl player and a 12 string guitar!

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I've been doing music in general over 12 years, and professionally for the last 5 years. I never studied music academically past GCSE since my school didn't offer that, however have continued to fight my way through the jungle that is the music industry! During my early years I just played acoustic solo guitar, performing to school events and assemblies, which slowly transformed into playing electric guitar in cover bands and recording original music. Eventually by default I learned how to record and produce music with friends since I couldn't afford any studios! Having a Dad and a Grandad who played music, and a Mum who listened to music like its her religion, really made me obsessed with this thing, and I still want to learn and meet amazing musicians every day.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: I would describe my style as fluid? If that makes any sense then great...! But if not, I say that since I'm always open to new ideas, experiments, thoughts and its also what I think about when i'm playing music!

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: I would love to work with Thom York, simply because I love his courage to keep changing musical direction. That to me is incredibly brave, as I also love to push the boundaries of experimental music. His blend of tastes also align very well with mine, therefore think we could make some great music together!

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: A great tip that helps me keep the momentum flowing is to commit to a sound! If it sounds good and you like it, stick to it and move forwards! Same goes with a musical idea/part- if it sounds good it is good!

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Currently I work on indie pop, pop, Rock, fusion and Alternative styles.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: My strongest skill is being able to understand the artist/clients vision and goals. I'm a great improvisor and can quickly create interesting elements based on the song, or in session work I can identify music easily by ear and interpret parts on the spot. Both helps me to jump onboard with the artists ideas and vision and have a wide rang of material that can be used in a track.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I eel I bring a unique ear, given my tastes are quite varied, and aim to bring fresh ideas and elements to a song to keep it interesting and engaging. My whole life has been surrounded by music and I genuinely enjoy listening to all genres, which helps me to create original ideas and truly engage with the work.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: Regardless of the job, I like to start by having a quick 30 minute call to discuss the goals and direction of the work, and to also get to know the client! For example production would entail talking about the references, instrumentation, project timeline etc. I prefer to do all my work with the artist in the room to have a natural work flow that they can be a part of. For recordings and session work, I rehearse/record remotely where required/requested, but also visit other locations depending on the project.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: My home studio is primarily used for recording guitar, vocals, keyboard, piano bass guitar, and any MIDI. I record guitars using a combination of tube amps and microphones, and also simulation technology. Vocals are recorded using my soundproof vocal booth in a sound treated room. There is an upright piano in the room, acoustic and electric guitars, all going through my SSL 12 and UAD plugins.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I'm very inspired by artists/bands such as Radiohead, Snarky Puppy, Pat Metheny, Jeff Beck, Antonio Carlos jobim, Steely Dan, Stevie wonder, Jamiroquai, Paco Da Lucia, Vicente Amigo (a very brief list!)

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I mainly work on live shows, recordings, production and tours.
