Interview with Neil Andrew

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of is Sua Aija by The Nuqta Project. I was the music producer, overseeing everything from arranging and composing to recording and mixing. What made it special was blending traditional Kumaoni folk elements with modern production, creating a sound that’s both authentic and fresh. It was rewarding to help bring regional music to a wider audience while respecting its roots, and the positive response made it all the more fulfilling.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now, I’m working on a bunch of digital and television advertisement music. It’s exciting because every project is different, and I get to experiment with a variety of styles while helping brands tell their story through sound.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: If someone on SoundBetter is good and can bring quality work, then why not? I’m always open to collaborating with talented professionals who can add value to a project and help get the best results for my clients.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I love analog more — it’s like vinyl for your ears, warm and a little imperfect, just like life should be. Digital’s cool too, but analog’s got that old-school charm!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to clients is to fully understand their vision and bring it to life with creativity, professionalism, and attention to detail. I commit to clear communication, timely delivery, and producing music that not only sounds great but truly connects with their audience

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I love most about my job is that every single day brings something new and exciting. Working across different genres keeps me inspired and constantly learning — there’s always a fresh challenge and a new sound to explore.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Customers usually ask me things like: “How long will the project take?”, “Can you work in this specific style or genre?”, and “What’s included in your production services?” I usually explain that timelines depend on the project scope but I strive to deliver high-quality work efficiently. I also emphasize my versatility across genres and my collaborative approach to make sure the music fits their vision perfectly. Finally, I clarify what stages I handle—from composing and arranging to mixing and mastering—so they know exactly what to expect.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: One of the biggest misconceptions about what I do is that music production is just about pressing buttons or making beats. In reality, it’s a deeply creative and collaborative process that involves understanding emotions, storytelling, sound design, arrangement, and technical skills. A lot goes on behind the scenes to bring a song or score to life not just making it sound good, but making it feel right.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually start by asking about the overall vibe and story they want the music to tell. Then I like to know if they have any favorite songs or artists they want me to take inspiration from. It’s important to understand what mood or emotions they want to capture, and where the music will be used—like a film, web series, or just a personal project. I also ask about their timeline and budget to make sure we’re on the same page. Sometimes I check if they want live instruments or vocals, and how involved they want to be throughout the process. And if they have any demos or ideas already, that really helps me get a clearer picture.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: My advice for anyone looking to hire a music producer is to be clear about your vision and goals from the start. Communication is key — share your references, moods, and what emotions you want the music to evoke. Look for a producer who listens well and can adapt their style to fit your project while bringing their own creative expertise. Don’t be afraid to ask for samples or previous work to make sure their sound aligns with what you’re looking for. A good collaboration is built on trust, openness, and mutual respect.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I were stranded on a desert island, I’d bring my laptop, mini keyboard, audio interface, headphones, and a mic — because even if there’s no wifi, the music’s gotta keep playing!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been passionate about music from a young age, starting with gospel choir performances and formal training in Hindustani classical music. Over the past 10 years, I transitioned into music production, combining my classical background with modern digital tools. Throughout my career, I’ve worked on diverse projects including Bollywood films like Dunki, popular web series like TVF Tripling, indie music, and fusion collaborations. This journey has allowed me to develop a versatile skill set and a deep understanding of both traditional and contemporary music landscapes.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is a fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds — blending Indian classical and folk influences with modern production techniques. I focus on creating emotionally rich, textured music that tells a story, whether through cinematic scores, soulful melodies, or vibrant fusion tracks. Versatility and attention to detail allow me to adapt my sound to fit the unique vision of each project.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Coldplay because their music beautifully combines emotional storytelling with innovative soundscapes. Their ability to blend alternative rock with electronic and orchestral elements resonates deeply with my own approach to music production. Collaborating with them would be an incredible opportunity to explore creative boundaries and contribute to music that connects with millions worldwide.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Use reference tracks during mixing to compare your work with professionally produced songs in the same genre. This helps you stay on track with tonal balance, loudness, and overall vibe.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I’m a versatile music producer comfortable working across a wide range of genres and styles. Whether it’s film scores, pop, folk fusion, electronic, gospel, or classical-inspired music, I adapt quickly to the project’s needs and bring creativity and technical skill to deliver the best possible sound.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill lies in my diverse musical foundation — having grown up immersed in gospel music through church choirs, combined with classical training in Hindustani classical music. This rich background gives me a deep understanding of melody, harmony, and vocal arrangements. Additionally, I’m proficient in keyboards and guitar, which allows me to contribute creatively across composition, arrangement, and production, bringing both emotional depth and technical skill to every project.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a unique blend of creativity, technical expertise, and cultural sensitivity to every song. My approach focuses on capturing the emotional core of the music while enhancing it with polished production techniques. Whether it’s crafting compelling melodies, layering rich textures, or balancing the mix for clarity and impact, I aim to create a sonic experience that connects deeply with listeners. Drawing from my background in both traditional Indian sounds and modern genres, I help songs stand out by giving them a distinctive, authentic voice.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My typical work process begins with understanding the client’s vision and the project’s requirements in detail. I start by gathering references, themes, and mood ideas to align on the sonic direction. Then, I create initial compositions or demos, often starting with melody or rhythm, depending on the project’s core. Once the demo is approved, I move on to arranging and layering instruments, blending acoustic and digital sounds to build texture and depth. I collaborate closely with vocalists, musicians, or directors to capture performances that enhance the track’s emotion. After recording, I focus on mixing — balancing levels, applying EQ, compression, and effects to achieve clarity and impact. Finally, I master the track to ensure it sounds polished and consistent across all listening platforms. Throughout, I maintain open communication with clients, providing updates and incorporating feedback to deliver a final product that meets or exceeds expectations.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is a hybrid setup combining the warmth of analog gear with the flexibility of digital tools. At the core, I use a powerful DAW — typically Logic Pro X for composing, arranging, and mixing. My hardware includes a MIDI controller (Native Instrument S49 MK3), audio interface (RME BabyFace), and studio monitors (Adams T7) for precise sound production. For recording, I have a range of microphones suited for vocals and instruments, including the Shure SM7B and AKG C414. I also integrate analog outboard gear like compressors and EQs to add character during mixing. This setup allows me to blend live acoustic elements—essential for folk fusion projects—with digital production techniques, ensuring each track has depth and clarity.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm deeply inspired by producers and composers who create emotionally immersive sound worlds. A.R. Rahman has been a long-time influence — his ability to blend Indian classical, electronic textures, and orchestral elements has shaped how I approach storytelling through music. I also draw from Karsh Kale’s boundary-pushing fusion of Indian folk and electronica, and Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross for their textural, cinematic scores that elevate the narrative.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I specialize in end-to-end music production — from composing and arranging to recording, sound design, and final mixing/mastering. Most commonly, I collaborate with filmmakers, artists, and content creators to develop original soundtracks, background scores, and songs that align with their creative vision. My work often involves crafting genre-blending tracks that combine cinematic, folk, and contemporary elements — whether it’s for a Bollywood film, indie release, web series, or branded content.
