Interview with Luke Bergis
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: There is an EP called "the Stars, Our Home" by a metal band called "Seeker of the Way" which I recorded with equipment costing less than $2k, but I think one couldn't tell by the sound of it!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am recording the debut album of a progressive rock band called Corrupted Symmetry. Finished drums tracking and can't wait to get started on guitar and bass.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, I was introduced to SoundBetter by a client
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Digital is fast but some analogue gear like the Empirical Labs distressor, the SSL G-series compressor etc have a distinctive sound that can't be found in the digital world.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I might be new on soundbetter but will work tirelessly to build a solid customer base. You can expect me to go over and beyond to achieve the results you are aiming for.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Talking to artists about their art.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Should we use real amplifiers or plugins on our guitars? My answer is, if you can afford it, try both and se which one sounds better for your music.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I am often mistaken for a professional espresso machine operator.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are their favorite sounding records? What kind of sound are they going for?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure you have double checked uploaded tracks for errors and named them properly. Have a few reference songs that you can use to point to the producer the direction you want your music to take.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Guitar, Bass, Computer, Monitors and an SM57
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started playing guitar professionally in 2004 and did three albums with Swedish metal band System Shock, which I also produced. About ten years ago I opened a small project studio where I recorded my own projects and local bands for free, or for a very low fee. About a year ago, I moved to Athens, Greece, bought a 200 square meter commercial space and turned it into a music recording and mixing studio.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: 50-50 analog/digital music producer.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: There's a band from Gothenburg, Sweden called Evergrey. I always admired them as musicians and composers. I'd love to mix one of their songs
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Listen to your mixes in various setups, including car, headphones and home stereos.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Metal, Rock, Hiphop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Communicating with the artist in order to turn their vision into high quality audio tracks.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I have a background as a recording musician and sound engineer in a wide variety of styles, from hip-hop and post rock to death metal and have produced/recorded/mixed successful artists in all these genres. I bring an outside opinion on the music of the artists I work with and happily contribute my ideas on arrangements, sound design and song production.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I load the individual tracks on cubase, check for errors and do any editing/processing as required. I usually process drums with analogue gear and if required reamp the guitars and bass. After some basic processing a rough mix is made, compared to reference mixes and sent to the client for feedback. Finally I do automation and complete the mix based on client feedback.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: It consists of a 30 square meter live room mostly used for drums tracking, a 25 square meter control room and some other spaces. I mix on two UAD Apollo quad into a Neve 8816, using some additional analogue gear and plugins. I own a wide variety amplifiers and cabinets as well as synthesizers and can turn projects that consist midi files into lively productions.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
