Interview with Luka Reinmöller
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently continuing the work for Beyond Skyrim and personal projects.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of is Beyond Skyrim. It’s the first major project I’ve worked on that wasn’t personal, and it was a fantastic experience. I had the opportunity to compose the town discovery stingers, small but impactful pieces of music that play when players discover new towns within the game. These stingers helped bring the world to life, adding a sense of excitement and discovery to each new location. My role was to compose and arrange these short, thematic pieces to capture the unique character and atmosphere of each town. It was a rewarding challenge to create music that felt both integrated into the world of Skyrim and added to the immersive experience of discovering something new. The positive feedback from the Beyond Skyrim community made it all the more fulfilling.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I’m 99% digital when it comes to my music production. Digital tools provide me with the flexibility, precision, and variety I need to craft detailed compositions without limitations. With the wealth of high-quality sample libraries, virtual instruments, and powerful software available, I can explore a vast array of sounds and textures. While I primarily work digitally, I do use plugins that emulate analog warmth, allowing me to capture some of the depth and character that analog gear is known for. Ultimately, digital gives me the efficiency and versatility I need, while I can still incorporate that analog vibe when it enhances the sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is that I will always deliver music that is not only technically proficient but emotionally engaging and true to the vision of the project. I am committed to collaborating closely with you throughout the process, ensuring that your ideas and feedback are valued and incorporated. I’ll provide compositions that enhance the story and resonate with your audience, and I will work tirelessly to make sure the final result meets your expectations. No matter the scale or style of the project, I promise to bring dedication, creativity, and a personal touch to every piece of music I create.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I like most about my job is the ability to tell stories through music. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about creating compositions that evoke emotions and bring a narrative to life. I love the process of exploring different moods, harmonies, and orchestrations to capture the essence of a story. Whether it’s crafting a sweeping cinematic score or an intimate, emotional piece, the power of music to connect with people and elevate a project is what drives me. I also enjoy the creative freedom to experiment with different sounds and styles, while constantly learning and pushing myself to grow as a composer.

Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions about what I do is that composing and producing music, especially in the orchestral and cinematic realms, is simply about having the right tools or software. While having access to high-quality sample libraries and gear is important, it’s not the heart of the process. People might think that once you have the technical setup, creating music becomes easy, but the reality is much deeper. It’s about connecting emotionally with the project, understanding the story, and translating that into music that resonates with the audience. The process is a balance between technical skill, artistry, and intuition—it’s far more than just placing notes in a DAW. It’s about crafting a piece of music that truly elevates the experience.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When working with a prospective client, I always start by asking a few key questions to make sure we’re on the same page. I’ll begin by asking about the overall vision for the project and what emotions or mood they want the music to convey. I also like to know if they have any reference tracks or composers they admire, as this helps me understand their musical tastes. Understanding the length and any specific timing or cues for the composition is essential, especially if it’s for film or a game. I’ll also ask about the intended audience and where the music will be used, so I can tailor the sound to fit the context. Preferences for orchestration or instrumentation are key as well, ensuring I align with their specific sound requirements. Of course, I always ask about the project timeline and budget to make sure we’re realistic about what’s possible. Finally, I ask how involved they want to be during the process and their preferred method of communication, ensuring we collaborate effectively and deliver a composition they’re truly excited about.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice to anyone looking to hire a composer is to find someone who truly understands the vision behind your project. It’s important to ensure that the composer can not only deliver technically, but also connect with the emotional core of the work. When you work with me, I’ll take the time to understand your needs, whether it’s a sweeping cinematic score, an intimate moment, or a specific mood you want to convey. I believe in a collaborative approach, where your feedback is valued and integrated into the process, ensuring the final composition feels personal and authentic. Communication is key, so don’t hesitate to share your ideas and vision clearly—together, we can bring your project to life with music that truly resonates.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were stranded on a desert island and could only bring five pieces of gear, I’d definitely take my Mac Mini M4 Pro to run Logic Pro X and manage my sample libraries. My Alesis 61-Key MIDI Keyboard would be essential for inputting melodies and crafting compositions. I’d also bring my Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Studio Headphones for accurate mixing and listening, ensuring I can hear every detail of my work. The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 Audio Interface would still be crucial for connecting any gear or recording live sounds if needed. Lastly, I’d bring an External Hard Drive or SSD to store all my sample libraries, projects, and backups, making sure I have plenty of space to keep my creative process going even in isolation.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my musical journey by recording myself playing electric guitar and producing original instrumental songs, but my true passion for orchestral music eventually led me down a new path. I’ve always been a fan of orchestral works, and as I explored deeper, I found myself drawn to composing expansive, cinematic scores. Completely self-taught, I honed my skills through experimentation and learning by doing. One of my key projects was working on a piece for Beyond Skyrim, which gave me valuable experience in creating immersive, narrative-driven compositions. I’ve been active in the orchestral music field for over 1.5 years now, constantly pushing myself to refine my sound and explore new ways to connect emotionally with listeners.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style blends cinematic storytelling with intricate orchestration and emotional depth. I focus on creating music that isn’t just heard, but felt—whether it’s through a sweeping melody or a subtle harmonic shift, my aim is to evoke real emotions. I love to create soundscapes that transport the listener, making them feel like they’re part of a living, breathing world. While orchestral elements are at the core of my compositions, I also draw from a wide range of influences, allowing my music to be flexible and adaptive to different moods and narratives. Ultimately, my style is about crafting immersive, dynamic compositions that resonate on a deep emotional level.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: If I had the chance to collaborate with any artist, it would definitely be Jeremy Soule. His work, especially on The Elder Scrolls series, has had such a profound impact on how I approach music. He has this incredible ability to blend epic orchestral elements with atmospheric textures, creating worlds that feel alive and immersive. His music tells stories without words, pulling you deep into the environment. Working with him would be a dream to learn how he crafts such emotional depth while staying true to the atmosphere of the worlds he creates. It would be amazing to explore new ways to bring those rich, cinematic landscapes to life.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: My top music production tip is to truly know the strengths and weaknesses of every piece of gear or software you use. Understanding what each tool excels at—and where it might fall short—lets you use them to their fullest potential. But just as importantly, get to know yourself as a creator. Recognize your own strengths and weaknesses in your workflow and approach. Being aware of both your tools and your own creative process allows you to adapt and make better decisions, ultimately leading to more efficient and powerful productions.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: My specialty is fantasy music, with rich orchestration and immersive soundscapes, perfect for video games and storytelling. However, I’m also open to other genres and styles—if you have a specific vision in mind, let’s discuss how I can bring it to life!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I’d say my strongest skill is my ability to create emotionally rich, story-driven compositions with detailed and realistic orchestration. I focus on crafting melodies and harmonies that truly resonate, ensuring the music not only supports the narrative but also elevates it. I’ve always prided myself on my flexibility—being able to adapt to different moods and narratives, making sure the composition fits the vision perfectly. I also take care of the mixing and mastering myself, which helps me ensure that the final sound is exactly how I or the client I'm working with want it to be—polished, immersive, and true to the emotion behind the music.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a deep sense of storytelling, emotion, and realism to every composition. My focus on detailed and authentic orchestration ensures that each piece feels organic and immersive, capturing the nuances of a live performance. I strive to evoke powerful emotions through melody and harmony, making sure the music resonates on a profound level. At the same time, I offer flexibility, tailoring each composition to fit the specific mood, narrative, or vision required. Whether crafting sweeping cinematic scores or intimate musical moments, I aim to create music that not only enhances the experience but also tells a compelling story of its own.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My composition process almost always begins with a piano sketch in Logic Pro X, allowing me to explore ideas freely without restrictions. I focus first on melodies, harmonies, and specific moods, ensuring the emotional core of the piece is strong before expanding the arrangement. Once the foundation is set, I begin orchestrating, carefully selecting instruments from my high-quality sample libraries to bring the composition to life. As I refine the piece, I handle the mixing and mastering myself, ensuring the final sound is polished and immersive. This hands-on approach allows me to shape every detail of my music, from the initial spark of inspiration to the fully realized cinematic experience.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is designed to bring cinematic compositions to life with precision and depth. I work in Logic Pro X, crafting orchestral scores with the help of MuseScore for detailed notation. My sound palette is powered by a collection of high-quality sample libraries, including Cinematic Studio Series, Strezov Sampling, East West, Best Service, and many more, allowing me to achieve a rich and expressive orchestral sound. I run everything on a Mac Mini M4 Pro, paired with a curved 4K screen for an immersive workflow. My setup includes an Alesis 61-key MIDI keyboard for performance input, a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen audio interface for pristine recordings, and a Shure SM7B microphone for capturing audio recordings. Monitoring is handled with Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro (250 Ohm) studio headphones, fine-tuned with Sonarworks Reference ID for accurate frequency response. This setup enables me to produce music with clarity, depth, and the cinematic quality I strive for in every composition.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: As a composer, I draw immense inspiration from the evocative and immersive works of Jeremy Soule, Howard Shore, and Jan Valta. Soule’s sweeping, atmospheric scores for The Elder Scrolls transport listeners to vast, living worlds, a quality I strive to capture in my own compositions. Howard Shore’s masterful work on The Lord of the Rings has profoundly influenced my approach to thematic storytelling, using rich orchestration to bring narratives to life. Jan Valta’s work on Kingdom Come: Deliverance resonates with me through its historical authenticity and emotional depth, blending folk and orchestral elements to create something truly timeless. These composers have shaped my musical identity, inspiring me to craft scores that are both deeply immersive and emotionally compelling.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My main focus is composing music for video games, but I’m also open to working on films, animations, commercials, podcasts, and other projects. If you think my style fits your vision, feel free to reach out, and we can discuss the details! My specialty is fantasy music, with rich orchestration and immersive soundscapes, perfect for video games and storytelling.
