Interview with Competitive Sound With Kenny

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Chemdogg's 'Eclectic Dogg Shit'. Its not out yet, but I feel artistically its what I've been trying to make. Check out Molly Moon's 'Spiraling' too, I really like how her vocals ended up sounding.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Chemdogg is my rap alter ego and that will never stop for me. besides that, I'm always somewhere in the process with other people whether we are just starting a song, or we are making the final adjustments to the master. I absolutely love making records.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I havent looked around, but I heard about this site from Alex Tumay who is a phenomenal mixer.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both but if I absolutely had to pick one it would be digital because I can take my laptop anywhere.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That you will be satisfied or I will send you your money back immediately.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Music!

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can you make this louder? Yes, but you will lose low end and if you level match the louder master with the more dynamic one you will find the more dynamic one to be more interesting to listen to. Long story short, yes, I can make it louder.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That mixing is a creative job. Engineers that recorded some of the best recordings ever were just doing what was technically correct.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What do you want to accomplish with this song? Who's music are you listening to?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Flashy looking content and numbers on an instagram page doesn't always mean quality audio work. I've worked with a lot of people that seemed like they had it together, but then 5 minutes in the studio proves that they look the part but are not the part.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A decent condenser mic, my octatrack, a bass guitar, an electric guitar, and a laptop with pro tools. does that count?

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started noodling with beats in garage band in 2014. I fell in love with this process and I've been doing it ever since. I started college in 2022 and I'm graduating in 2026 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Technology. I want to make records that a lot of people enjoy. I want to make popular commercial music whatever that may look like for me. Could you be the artist that moves the needle with me?

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Laid back and honest.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: The Alchemist. I love his beats and I would love to rap on them.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: No demos! I've seen so many amazing songs get ruined because the producer thought it was 'just a demo'. when you set out to make a song, treat it like the final product always and you will not only make more songs but learn to trust your artistry.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Hip hop but I love all music. Even Country (laughs)

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: mixing with technical precision.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: taste I feel like I'm the voice you need to help you relax so you arent making an unfocused production. When I get a mix with over 50 tracks and half of them are guitars that are basically saying the same thing I'll whittle down those tracks to get them to a point that makes sense sonically and artistically. I dont treat a sound unless it needs treatment. I'm not afraid to track a song and release it without adjusting any parameters if the song doesn't need it.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Typical process is tracking my hip hop project Chemdogg. I'll find a sample that inspires me, tempo map the sample, apply drums where I find necessary, rap on it in the control room, give it a little mix and master, then start on the next one. Every song is different no two processes are exactly alike.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: currently, I have access to a beautiful Gavin Haverstick designed studio equipped with a Neve 5088 and a multitude of mics, preamps, compressors, and eqs. at my house I use Universal Audio plugins. I have a Weiss DS1 MK3 for mastering.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: My first love of music came from GZA's liquid swords from there it was Atmosphere, and then I started finding samples used in those songs so then I became a fan of basically all music.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Most common would be tempo mapping and editing, then mixing, then tracking,
