Interview with David Hrlic
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of my recent highlights was co-producing, mixing and mastering a track for an artist I've been working with. The track ended up getting signed to Thrive Music, with Tomorrowland Music and Repopulate Mars also expressing interest in signing it. It's always an amazing feeling to see a project you've helped shape from the production stage all the way to the final master receive that kind of recognition from respected international labels. Moments like these are exactly why I love what I do! π₯
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on new electronic music releases alongside mixing, mastering and production projects for other artists. I love having both sides of my career running in parallel. Producing my own music keeps me creative, while working with clients constantly introduces me to new sounds and ideas.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to treat your music with the same passion and attention to detail as my own. No generic templates, no one-size-fits-all approach. I'll take the time to understand your vision, respect what makes your music unique and help bring out its full potential. I'll always give you honest feedback, even if that means telling you something doesn't need fixing. At the end of the day, I want you to feel that your track still sounds like you β just the best version of it. π₯
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Honestly, the fact that music never gets boring! Every artist brings a different perspective, a different story and a different sound. I love diving into someone else's musical world, understanding what they're trying to express and helping them bring it to life. And there's nothing quite like that moment when everything comes together and the artist hears their track in a whole new way. Getting to do something I genuinely love every day is a pretty amazing feeling. π₯
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: Do I need mixing or mastering? A: If you're already happy with your mix, mastering is probably all you need! If something still feels off with the balance, groove or individual elements, I'd recommend working on the mix first. I'm always happy to give you my honest opinion. Q: Can you make my track sound like my reference? A: References are super helpful! They give me an idea of the sound you're aiming for. But my goal isn't to make your track a copy of something else β it's to bring out its own character while achieving the quality you're looking for. Q: Can I request revisions? A: Of course! Mastering includes 1 revision, while mixing includes 2. I want you to feel confident and excited about the final result. π₯
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don't just look for someone who can make your track sound polished and professional. Look for someone who understands your vision and shares your excitement about the music. A technically perfect track doesn't necessarily make it a great one. It's the character, emotion and little imperfections that often make a song truly special. Find someone who recognizes those qualities and knows how to bring them out rather than polish them away. π₯
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A laptop with FL Studio, a great pair of headphones, an audio interface, a MIDI keyboard and a solar-powered generator.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: **What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?** I've been making music for around 20 years, and honestly, I still get just as excited about it as I did when I first started. What began as a passion for electronic music and countless hours spent in front of my computer eventually turned into a career I could only have dreamed of back then. Over the years, I've had the opportunity to release music on some incredible labels, play at my dream festivals and share the stage with some of my favorite artists. But what I love most hasn't really changed: getting lost in making music and creating something that makes people feel something. Today, I get to share everything I've learned along the way by helping other artists bring their own ideas to life. βοΈ
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all sound. Every track has its own identity, and I love finding that one thing that makes it special. Sometimes it's a raw, imperfect sound, a tiny detail or something completely unexpected. I'm a big believer in experimenting and happy accidents. Often, those unexpected moments are exactly what make a track unique. And I think they happen most when you approach music with childlike curiosity, have fun and simply allow yourself to play. I like music that feels alive, not just technically perfect. π₯
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: If you're working on something that sounds different and doesn't quite fit into a genre, don't be too quick to change it! Some of the most exciting tracks are the ones that break the rules and create something unexpected. Trust your gut, embrace what makes your music different, and don't be afraid to stand out. π₯
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: My roots are in electronic music, especially House Music and everything under its Umbrella, but I also enjoy working on Pop, Indie Pop and other electronic styles. I love working across genres because every style brings something different to the table.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Knowing what a track needs and what it doesn't. After two decades of producing music, I've developed a strong instinct for balance, groove, arrangement and sound selection. I approach mixing and mastering from both a technical and a producer's perspective.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Of course, clarity, warmth and punch are important, but to me, it's all about the character of the song. Every track has its own personality, and my job is to understand what makes it special and bring that to the forefront.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by listening to your track and understanding your vision. If you have reference tracks, even better! For mastering, I focus on tonal balance, dynamics, punch and translation across different sound systems. For mixing, I work on everything from clarity and separation to depth, groove and energy. For co-production, I take a step back and look at the bigger picture: What's missing? What's already working? And what's simply too much? Sometimes it's about adding the right element, sometimes it's about removing something that doesn't serve the track. My philosophy is simple: Less is more, but the less has to be strong. Once I've delivered the first version, we fine-tune the details together until the track feels right.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by artists and producers who have their own unique sound and aren't afraid to push boundaries. Daft Punk for their timeless creativity, Disclosure for their incredible grooves and attention to detail, and Diplo for his versatility across genres. But honestly, inspiration can come from anywhere. From a beautifully produced Pop record to a raw underground club track or Indie Rock song. I love discovering new sounds and bringing those influences into my own work.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my client work revolves around mixing, mastering and production enhancement. I help artists turn their tracks into polished, powerful and release-ready records, whether it's a final stereo master, a full mix or those last production details that make everything click.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Iβd love to work with Blond:ish, Chris Lake and Diplo. They all have a distinctive style and bring a fresh and forward-thinking approach to house music.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digitalβfor the speed, flexibility, and efficiency. But I love blending organic textures and live-recorded elements to keep my tracks warm and alive.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Tell us about your studio setup. To be honest, my studio setup is pretty simple! π I mainly work on my laptop, my beloved Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones and a pair of KRK Rokit 5 monitors when I'm home. FL Studio has been my DAW of choice for years, alongside a carefully selected collection of professional mixing, mastering and production plugins. I've always believed that less is more. Keeping my setup minimal allows me to stay flexible, work from almost anywhere and focus on what really matters: the music and the vision. At the end of the day, great results come from experienced ears, creativity and knowing your tools and not from having the most fancy studio.
