Cedar Dobson on SoundBetter

I am an Irish Traditional musician specialising with ten years of Tin Whistle experience. I am an award-winning, versatile musician who has featured on many albums and songs across the world. I specialise with recording tin whistle for client's songs as well as composing custom Celtic tunes. I am so happy to work with you on your next project!

Are you looking for high-quality, Irish tin whistles to be recorded for your song? Are you looking for the gorgeous flavour of Celtic woodwinds for your recordings in several genres? Do you have a friend or family member that you want to give a meaningful gift to? What about a custom Celtic/Irish/Scottish tune named in honour of them? I can compose a special tune just for them!

My name is Cedar Dobson and I am a California-born musician with ten years of Irish tin whistle experience. I hold an Honours Bachelor's Degree in Music Production, having studied in the legendary Windmill Lane Recording Studios in Dublin, where some of the world's greatest artists have recorded (Ed Sheeran, U2, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, and more)

I have performed with world-renowned musicians such as John Doyle (grammy-nominated Irish guitarist from Solas), Tara Breen (multiple All-Ireland fiddle champion), Liam Kelly (flautist from the band Dervish) and many other talented musicians.

I would be so happy to record high-quality tin whistle recordings for your projects and/or to compose custom tunes! I play many genres, including traditional/contemporary Irish music, world, pop, rock, blues, old-time, and more. I have a vast repertoire of Irish tunes, common Irish ballads, and songs in several genres. I am happy to discuss your project to suit your needs (recording/custom tune)!

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Cedar was a pleasure to work with. She gave me a number of options to work with, all performed and recorded to the highest standard. Highly recommended.

Interview with Cedar Dobson

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I got to be a part of a short film that has won lots of awards. I played whistle on it and the animated short film is STUNNING! I LOVE animation and I'm so proud that I got to be a part of it!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I finished a song for a client and I'm working on producing a song for another client and adding whistle stems for another client

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don't know any at the moment but I'll explore and share

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital as I grew up in the digital age and have very little experience with analog but I'd love to work with analog equipment if I get the chance

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To provide the best whistle tracks or to compose the best tune for them that I possibly can

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Being able to provide whistle for other's tracks or to compose a custom tune for them as both are very fulfilling. I love the mental challenge of playing and composing new music and I love to see how it affects other's lives

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How long will it take me? I answer with when is their deadline and work with that

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I seem like I can only play Irish Traditional music but I can improvise and play in several genres on the tin whistle

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is your goal for your track? How amazing can we make it sound while working together?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Give me as many details as possible for any service I require as it gives me a better understanding of exactly it is you want so I can reflect that musically

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Copeland Low D whistle, my iMac (and things to make it work), my two hard drives, and my microphone

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been pursuing music full time since November 2023 (after graduating college). I'm working to get higher quality opportunities for myself

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Percussive, lively, emotional, and unique

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I'd love to work with some of the greatest in Irish Traditional music as well as other genres as it would be so fulfilling to work with others musically. I would grow as a musician and as a person too

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Trust yourself and your ear

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Celtic/Trad, but I love fusion and other genres as well

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Performing music on the tin whistle

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Liveliness, joy, depth, color, and beauty as my style of whistle playing is very unique. I want to add the most life and emotion to a track that I can through the tin whistle. The whistle is my voice

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I listen to the piece and play either by ear, write the whistle parts myself, or play the provided notation. I book the recording pod and record the stems. I bounce the dry stems and send them to the client for them to drag into their DAW

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I record in either a studio pod in a public library with high-quality equipment they provide or I record at home with my gear. I use Logic Pro X as my DAW

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Brian Finnegan, John Doyle, Martin Hayes, Alan Doherty, Kevin Crawford, and many more

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Providing tin whistle stems for client's tracks
