Interview with Tim Buppert
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I sang a demo and the song was recorded by Trisha Yearwood. I was then asked to sing on the record and when the song was released to radio I was asked to sing my part on the ACM's. FYI several well know names tried to reproduce my part on the record and I was ultimately called in to save the day..... HA !!!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Several song demos for clients as well as recoding projects for my band.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Tania Hancheroff, Lydia Salnacova, I'm sure there's more but I haven't been on the site much yet.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Well I own over 3,000 albums on vinyl and it's easier to listen to BUT for work on songs and demos etc. it's gotta be digital.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'm not happy till you're not happy...... Wait is that right ? :)
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The people. It's all about the connections you make along the way.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's easy.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When do you need it. What style are you after.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let's approach this as friends and let the music make all the decisions.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Yari Acoustic. I'm guessing there's no electricity so maybe some beers ?
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Came to Nashville to be a writer and wound up having a good career as both a writer and a session musician. Been doing it 30+ years
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Easy on the ears.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: They're all dead ;( Ha no... really I just like to work.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The best songs are the simple ones. Don't get caught up in trying to show everyone how many chords you know or how fas you can play. Send em home singing your melody.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I like everything from Country to R & B. I've done a little Rap as well. I don't do any heavy rock stuff. There's lots of good singers for that. If I cant do your song justice I'll tell you up front and recommend someone else If I can.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have a pretty wide vocal range so I can add the high harmony as well as a low ( even bass in the morning ) harmony that covers it all.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I'm a hit songwriter with #1 songs to my credit. I've also sung on lots of demos that became hits as well as thousands of tunes that did not become hits. I can "fix up" your melody or sing it exactly as you want it. My voice is very "User Friendly" in other words not so stylized as to put your song in a box.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I try to get things out within a few days or else they get backed up. Every project is different but generally I send out the vocal files and tweak if needed. Same process for melody and or music writing. I write on guitar BTW if I'm adding music and melody to your lyric.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I primarily use my Neumann M49 Clone by Mic & Mod. I also have the Warm Audio WA-47 and WA-251 mics. I run those through the Shadow Hills Mic Pre and then ( for mild compression ) Purple Audio Compressor. Currently running the Universal Audio X8 with an Imac and Pro Tools
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Tons of songwriter demos. Backing vocals on artist projects. Adding top line to existing tracks. Writing music and adding top line to song lyrics.
