He arranged my winning song “Mahal Kong Mandaluyong” and other demo songs for Philpop and other songwriting competitions. I also commisioned him for orchestral arrangements. His music definitely made my songs sound more grand and magical with his knowledge on chord progressions, counterpoint, and orchestration, balanced with his natural heart for fine lines and melodies.

Interview with J.C. Jose

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The 12-track album I was talking about—I'm proud of it because it's the first album I've created that involves a lot of music writing.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I have just finished a 12-track album for a cultural agency here in the Philippines. I arranged, produced, and mixed children's songs for YouTube. The album is yet to be released.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: None. I just started SoundBetter.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I prefer digital, as I started in the digital age, and it's more convenient for logistical purposes.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is that I will deliver on time, ensuring quality and reliability throughout the process.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Doing what you love to do.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: "How much is your rate?" It depends on the scope of work and your budget. Let's discuss your needs, and I’ll provide a tailored estimate.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Sound engineering may seem easy, and people often think we're doing nothing while sitting at the board, but it requires focus, precision, and a deep understanding of the sound to make everything come together perfectly.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I first ask clients for the scope of work, then begin based on that.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I work with passion and am easy to deal with. I’m very considerate when it comes to revisions and feedback, always striving to make the process smooth and collaborative.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: a computer, audio interface, speakers, MIDI controller, and guitar.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started as a choral singer, then became a backup vocalist before transitioning into a sound engineer for Acapellago. From there, I ventured into music arranging, initially focusing on vocal arrangements, and later studied orchestration. This all happened while I was also writing songs.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Philosophical. I maintain the balance between being organic and mechanical.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I aspire to work with every Filipino vocal group someday, spreading the beauty of vocal music through high-quality, top-tier production.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: If it sounds good, it’s good—no matter how you achieved it.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly, I work with vocals and/or orchestral arrangements.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is listening. I listen to songs, I reflect on my past and present works, but most importantly, I listen to you.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Balance. For me, achieving the right balance between organic and mechanical elements is the key to making a song or sound truly stand out.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: The workflow depends on the service I’m providing. For compositions, most of my time is spent researching sounds, creating mood boards, and then diving into the actual work. Each process is carefully tailored to suit the specific genre or service I’m working on, ensuring the best results.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I use a pair of IK iLoud monitors powered by a Focusrite 18i20 audio interface, all running on a reliable gaming computer. Most of my recordings are either done in-house or outsourced to a professional studio for optimal quality.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Every musician inspires me, regardless of type or genre.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I sang with a world-renowned choir that toured internationally for 12 years. Following that, I became a sound engineer for Acapellago, an internationally acclaimed a cappella group, a role I continue to this day. My work primarily focuses on vocal music, both a cappella and otherwise, with a strong specialization in vocals. Additionally, I write, arrange, and orchestrate music for backing tracks, background scores, and film projects.
