Interview with Guilherme Monteiro

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: A tube amplifier A ribbon microphone A Telecaster guitar A Jazz bass A seven-string acoustic guitar

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I’ve been in music for over 13 years, working with gigs, teaching, and recording in the studio. Since the pandemic, I also started working as a composer and began releasing my own albums. Additionally, for the past 4 years, I’ve set up my own studio, Estúdio do Véio.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: My style is inventive, thoughtful, and impactful.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: I would really love to work with Pat Metheny one day. I believe he is one of the musicians who has most successfully connected creativity with the power to move people. He knows how to use few notes to evoke beautiful emotions, and he also knows how to explore his technique to create musically complex environments.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: A production tip is to listen carefully to the instrument before capturing the sound. This ensures that the ear is completely certain of how the instrument's sound should be recorded and equalized to achieve the best sonic texture for each project.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: World music, pop music and soundtracks.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Our main qualities are professionalism, creativity, and ease of communication.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: We bring a sound rich in tones and unique phrasing. Inspired by Brazilian music, flamenco, and traditional music from around the world, combined with the modernity and freedom of jazz and world music, we bring a fresh touch to the client's project and a sound that cannot be found anywhere else. All with great precision, professionalism, and care.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: Usually, the client sends the session with the ideas they want to be recorded. We listen to the session and experiment with the instruments together to find the best tone and playing style that the song requires. After that, we move on to miking and capturing the instruments, sending them back to the client with the most polished and realistic sound that the instrument has in the musician's hands. This greatly facilitates mixing and post-production.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: Our mixing console is a Behringer Eurodesk 4882, made in Germany. Our list of peripherals includes: a Focusrite Platinum Penta, an Aphex Aural Exciter, an Aphex Easyrider 106, a Yamaha REV100 reverb, an Alesis Microverb, 2 Behringer MDX4600s, and much more. Among our main microphones are: one Oldbox M4 Ribbon, four Shure SM57s, two AKG D112s made in Austria, two AKAI Vintage Omnidirectionals, a 1960s Shure SM58, an AKG C2000, an AKG C3000, as well as other microphones that cover the range of instruments we record.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Pat Metheny, Paco de Lucia, Javier Limón, Rubén Blades, Yamandu Costa, Snarky Puppy.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Remote and in-person recordings of percussion in general and string instruments. Usually, composers arrive at the studio with only the lyrics and melody of the song, so we create all the arrangements and record all the necessary instruments to make the music sound as the composer envisioned.
