Interview with Anthony Fiddler

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The Heels - I Am. It was the first full length record I produced front to back. I had many co-writes on the record and was involved from the beginning. From pre pro to the final mixes.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A 9 song record with Nashville artist "Bryan Ruby", recorded up in Vancouver, BC at the legendary Warehouse Studios.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Chris Jacobie and Taylor Allum are outstanding dudes! They'll steer you right.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Mix of both. Analog brings that warm, saturated tone unreachable from digital entities, however, digital brings in so many useful tools that allows for more in the box and less resources to efficiently record/produce/mix music.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: It isn't done until we're both happy!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That I get to do this for a living.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Do you have availability to record a song/record? - Yes, I will always make time!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I lead a wealthy life of riches. It can be a nasty, over saturated industry out there with everyone just trying their best.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are your goals with your music? How long have you been doing this? Have you co-written with anyone? Have you recording music before? What is expected of me to bring to the table for you?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Make sure the producer/engineer knows your goals and aligns with your vision of your project.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Electric and acoustic guitar, Apollo Twin, midi Keyboard, VSX Headphones.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Immediately after high school I enrolled in a post graduate Sound Design and Recording course. I graduated with a certificate in 2009 and got a job at the local music store while producing on the side. Eventually word of mouth and accolades grew and I quit that job in 2015 and made the career choice to produce, write and mix music ever since.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Rock foundation based with pop and electronic elements.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Jason Aldean and/or Thrice. They both bring a uniqueness and edge to their respective genres.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Use your ears. If it sounds good, then keep running with it.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Country, rock, pop and folk.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Finding the sounds and arrangements that best suit the song.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: New, inspiring and creative ideas focused on giving each Artist a uniqueness to standing out above the rest in their targeted genre.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: First and foremost is the song. The artist presents a "work tape" (usually an audio recording via iphone or the like) with a vocal and acoustic guitar (or piano etc.). We build the song up from that in the direction we believe it can go. From there we re-track what needs rerecording and get the final stems in place for mixing and mastering.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Home based studio with outboard gear variety and vocal/guitar booth. In house mixing and production.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Bob Ezrin, Bob Rock, Dave Cobb, Busby, Joey Moi.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Music production and mixing.
