Magnus Andre // Andrecordings on SoundBetter

From psychedelic folk-rock to Swedish death-metal, covering everything in between - that's the ballpark I'm playing in.

I'm Magnus Andre, a producer, recording-mixing-mastering engineer with 18 years worth of professional industry experience based in forests of Lahemaa National Park, Estonia.

Whilst mainly working as producer and engineer I also have 17 years worth of experience as a professional touring musician with my band Talbot playing in 33 different countries worldwide.

Genres I feel the most comfortable in:

- Rock (post, alt, stoner, psychedelic, kraut, desert, indie, punk, grunge),

- Metal (post, industrial, stoner, thrash, death, doom, etc).

Some of my most accredited and noteworthy work has included working alongside the BBC as lead sound engineer and production head in Shelton San’s session for the BBC which I broadcast live from Estonia directly to the BBC in Merseyside, UK.

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Magnus has been my go-to guy when it comes to heavier music, but this time I hired him to master the new single of my hip-hop project and gotta say, the end product is great sounding! The communication was again smooth and the overall process very professional. Thanks again Magnus for an awesome job!

I have had the pleasure working with Magnus on several occasions now and the experience has been great every time. The man has a great ear and awesome sound! As a musician and a songwriter Magnus has also solid understanding how to serve your song and he has the knowledge and the experience how to get the best out of your music. He is also very good communicator, easy to work with and his passion for making music/records really shines through. When you work with Magnus you have the feeling your music is in good hands.

Magnus is hands down the best engineer to capture the essence of your sound. If you've heard that your band sounds great live then he's the man to capture that spark of energy in the bottle. And he's good at making you feel at ease and not thinking about the recording environment too much. His Andrecordings studio hut also has a lot to do with it thanks to it's idyllic setting being slightly out of town in the woods and located by the sea. It has a lot of natural lighting because it has a lot of large windows and you really feel that you're a bit in the wild. PS - You can trust his judgement!

I had the pleasure of first working alongside Magnus in 2022 when I was appointed to be the BBC representative and coordinator for Shelton San’s BBC Live Session. Magnus was proactive, professional and knowledgeable and underwent learning how to live broadcast a gig directly from Estonia to BBC National Airwaves via a specific BBC platform. In my 10 years of broadcasting and music industry experience, I have never seen a production engineer as professional as Magnus Andre, his sound capabilities and stress management are superb. I highly recommend Magnus Andre for any upcoming projects.

Interview with Magnus Andre // Andrecordings

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Shelton San - Wilderness Follows album. I had a chance to be a co producer as well and this opens up the new angles and possibilities to craft your sound the best possible way to make the band sound great.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: When I start the mix, time starts flying, meaning the project is exciting and worth diving deep into it.

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: Most common one is "can I upload this to streaming?" Usually the answer is yes.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: Some people think i'm a DJ because I'm "mixing".

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: "Is it gonna be digital only or vinyl as well"?

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Communication is the key! Always make sure what are your expectations and what is the reality.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: -Laptop -Sm57 -Sound Interface -Huge portable speaker -Acoustic guitar Should be enough to make some noise!

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I've been doing this for 18 years. I started out recording my own band and music, then moving on to producing local bands and so on. Now I'm doing this on daily basis, also mixing 5.1 for the movies.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Punchy with a round bottom end. No "template" mixing!

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: All Them Witches. Just love their music.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Go listen to your mixes from the next room with the door open. It gives you a quick understanding of the overall balance and feel.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: Mostly, on different sub-genres of metal/rock

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: Depends if I'm tracking, mixing or mastering. Typically, I'm trying to get things done fast and stress-free,

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: I mainly use Allen&Heath ZED R16 hybrid console for most of the things, because of its variety of different options and workflow. It still has an analogue feel and the EQ for tracking is really good. Then it's RME DigiFace for conversion and finally Adam A77X for playback.

  29. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  30. A: Yes. Frederik Uglebjerg from Denmark. He's doing a great work!

  31. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  32. A: Just finished an album of an instrumental rock band with saxophone as a leading instrument.

  33. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  34. A: Love digital. Love analog. Both have their charm. They sure are fulfilling each other. But mixing always 100% in the box.

  35. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  36. A: I never let anything "half-baked" out of my studio. I'm pushing as much as possible to bet the best result out of it.

  37. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  38. A: I'm able to work in relatively wide range of genres. Although my main genres are the different styles of rock and metal, I can also feel pretty comfy working with ska, jazz and modern dance-rock, and so on.

  39. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  40. A: I try to think of what my client has in mind as close as possible. Also I'm not the guy who tries to push through my own taste or opinion, unless asked otherwise.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I still get inspired by Andy Wallace and his creative mixing techniques. His punchy midrange clarity has always been one of my goals to achieve. Also, Kurt Ballou and Steve Albini's work is something I always admire.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I usually record a band in my studio, mix all the songs and most of the time I do mastering as well.
